Optiarc AD-5290S

#41

Beginning to wonder this myself.

In the last couple of years, Vinpower has released or announced “Plextor”, “Optiarc”, and “Piodata” (Pioneer) drives that are actually the same LiteOn mechanism with Vinpower’s own custom code that mimics some, but not all, of the features of drives from these defunct product lines. Do they have the original source code base as a starting point? Or have they hired firmware authors from the original manufacturers’ teams? If not … what is the point?

I am reminded of consumer electronics badged with defunct quality brands (Westinghouse, Emerson, Fisher, etc) which are just licensed labels that imply nothing about what’s inside compared to the original models of old.

@kercy @schuster

VinPower has too little market to produce independent constructions.
It has a choice of only PLDS, LG .QSI because I do not have other DVD on the market.
As far as I know, the Renesas DVD chipset is no longer available, and the LIteOn iHAS X \ W, the Teac DV-5600, the VinPower Optiarc AD-5280S are not produced.
In fact, even if he wanted to produce the drive itself, there are no parts to this already on the market. There was only MediaTek chipset and three types of mechanics and optics.

@ Tester_1

Of course, the drive returns C2 errors - it is even reported in the test.
The drive has very good read and CD corrections - surely the best of the newer designs. The CD Check has reached the maximum rating and one of the best test results in our tets history.

Verbatim DVD + R MCC004 MBI India - We have specially selected one of the last production batches of a very poorly marketed party to see how it can handle the drive. We plan to have MID test updates: YUDEN T02, YUDEN T03, TDK 003, RITEK F16, MCC 003, MCC 004, FTI R08, RICOHJPN D01, TYG02, ProdiscF02, and good quality for comparison MCC004 but it will take some time.

OK, Thank you

I scanned a bad CD-R with my ihas 124 F and the C2 error rate it shows were unrealistic. Max value 2911, total 623357

The Benq 1640 show max 140 and 3379 total

So the 5290S Plus is much more accurate than the Liteon, the FW seems to be completely different.

The media you want to test sounds nice, but I dunno if it help the ppl. I still have some T02, T03 but most others not. And some of the media is also impossible to find here in Germany, some of them are legacy.

Standard MCC, CMC, Optodisc, maybe Ritek and MBI, Ume/AML are the things you can get now, maybe the focus on that media is enough

Let’s test DVD on what we have.
I do not have anything DVD- + R from UmeDisc except for a few Kodak DVD + Rs x8 which I am sorry for the tests.

Thanks for update

Looks like it don´t like AML003 and UME02 :\

I know, AML 003 vary a lot, but UME02 works overall good for me

Or get Amazon C-Grade-media?

You have to ask @jadburner.
He seems to be in hell all those inaccessible and rare CD \ DVDs are found.

Crazy different scan results for D03 :fearful:

It´s not good media, but scan of 1640 is awful

#53

Amazon’s AML 003 and UME02 are not the best. When time permits I’ll be testing other brands with the same MIDs.

Many of my drives do not like CMC MAG D03. However, I will test another brand to see if the results are any different.

#54

Interestingly, the Philips DVD + R DL from CMC Magnetic always gets much worse than other OEM HP DVD + R DL from CMC Magnetic.
