SOUND PROBLEMS SOLVED!!
forgot to mention this before, but was also having problems playing other media files, including .wav and .wmv - the files would not play at the correct speed and would end up jumping, missing out seconds.
however, after playing the hulk for a while, it too started jumping, so decided to look at the readme (as i had done with all the other games), and it mentioned that any problems with the sound, might be to do with the hardware acceleration.
so, (via the sound tab in dxdiag) i disabled the hardware acceleration and, feeling lucky, tried starsky and hutch and it worked!
next, decided to try ford racing. using no acceleration, but although i now had sound, it seemed to be playing at twice the speed. so i changed the hardware acceleration to 'basic' and all problems solved!!
just annoying that when i want to play a game, i have to change the hardware acceleration just to get sound! :a
btw rdgrimes, when i looked at nvidia website the latest 2.45 drivers were only available for win2000/xp, though will upgrade when the win98 version is released.
