I don't know for sure, but I think this is due to the many ways a gigabyte can be prenteded.
Some say: 1 megabyte = 1024 kilobyte, 1 gigabyte = 1024 megabyte
Others say: 1 megabyte = 1024 kilobyte, 1 gigabyte = 1000 megabyte
Fools say: 1 megabyte = 1000 kilobyte, 1 gigabyte = 1000 megabyte
Anyhow, if you want to compress a movie, you'd best use a program that transcodes the movie. There are quite some programs capable of doing this. Some names: CloneDVD, DVD2One, DVDShrink (free!). My suggestion: do a search on these names on our forum, you'll find out a lot.
Besides that, make sure you pay a visit to our
transcoding forums, to read about the products and some guides on how to backup movies.
If you got any questions, feel free to use our search, or just to ask them!
