Gaga invites local 10-year-old to on-stage duet at Toronto show
Maria Aragon, the 10-year-old Winnipegger who has become an instant YouTube star with her video of a Lady Gaga cover, got a chance to chat with her idol this afternoon – and she could be gracing the stage beside Lady Gaga come March.
The Grade 5 student at Isaac Brock School was overcome with emotion as she had a phone conversation with Gaga herself this afternoon. The chat was organized by Toronto radio station 99.9 Virgin Radio, but Aragon was in the Winnipeg studio of Hot 103 FM with host Ace Burpee.
"Not only do you have such a beautiful voice and you are so joyful to watch, but every once in a while, whether people believe it or not, I have a very bad day," Lady Gaga, reached by phone, told the stunned girl.
"I was not having such a good day, and when (entertainment blogger Perez Hilton) sent me the video of you singing Born This Way, I was so overjoyed that I began to cry."
The conversation with Gaga came as a total surprise to Maria Aragon, who could hardly believe her luck.
"I just want to say I love your music, thank you so much," she said later in the chat.
Virgin Radio has offered to fly Aragon to Toronto to see Lady Gaga’s concert in March, but it looks like the young performer might do more than watch.
"Maybe you’re just going to have to come on stage with me and sing that song," Lady Gaga said to the ecstatic youngster.
"Do you have anything you want to ask me, darling?" Lady Gaga asked mid-chat, to which the girl replied, "Where do you get your outfits?"
Two days ago, Aragon was performing renditions of pop songs with a smile for an online audience in the low thousands on her sister’s YouTube account.
But after a enthusiastic Twitter message from Lady Gaga to her eight million followers sent Aragon skyrocketing to international fame Thursday, the Winnipegger has had a whirlwind of attention from the media and general public. By this morning she was the most viewed video for the day on YouTube. She's had roughly 2 million video views and counting for her cover of Gaga’s "Born This Way."
Aragon had no less than four mentions on YouTube's main page by mid-morning today, as the most viewed, top favorited, top trending, and most popular video in the music category on the website.
Since Gaga's fateful Tweet, Aragon has been the subject of hundreds of online articles and blog posts worldwide, and has been featured on ET Canada and Access Hollywood, among other outlets.
The student at Isaac Brock School is a Twitter sensation, with a huge push to get the young performer on Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show – spurred on by a supportive message on Twitter from Ellen herself Thursday.
She’s also garnering widespread interest from new fans in the Philippines, and has had interest from at least one record company.
"If you watch anything on the Internet today, it must be THIS!!!" Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton tweeted yesterday, claiming credit for bringing the video to the attention of Lady Gaga.
Aragon had planned to fly to Toronto to perform on Toronto Virgin Radio this morning, but the station reported the foul weather in Winnipeg prevented her from making it there, and chatted with her by phone instead.
"(Music is) my passion," Aragon told the Free Press Thursday. ""I've made 72 videos already, so it's kinda obvious I like music."
Maria made a visit to the Hot 103 studios over the lunch hour Thursday for a special interview and performance with Burpee, who picked her up from school in a stretch limo.
While in studio surrounded by local media, she showed a tremendous amount of poise as she sang the Bruno Mars song Just the Way You Are for radio listeners.
Maria said she's been singing since she was three years old, but is only now learning to read music.
"For my videos, I don't have music sheets for them. I just taught myself," she said Thursday.
