Greetings,
I want an all around solid dvd writer. It must be around $50.00 and available at most big box stores.

I write about 100 dvd per year. I use taiyo uden mostly.

Thank you

Hi and welcome to the forum

If you want a SATA drive I suggest the NEC/Optiarc 7240

For an IDE drive, if you can find one, I suggest a Pioneer 116 or 117

thank you for your reply

How can I determine if my computer will accept a sata drive?

Also, I do not think the Pioneer is available anywhere.

thx again

You’re welcome

What is your mainboard? If you have a recent board, then almost certainly SATA drives are supported

These Pioneers are indeed hard to find. Another option for Pata/IDE might be Optiarc AD720xA series (AD7200, AD7201, AD7203). It’s the predecessor of AD724x series, which is unfortunately only available as Sata version.
