If you want to be careful:
For the 1st month to 8 weeks: Update your drive to the latest firmware for the same type of drive (OEM=bulk or Retail) only. Latest are G7P9 and B7T9. Because of quality issues with BenQ atm do not void your warranty until you are sure you got a good one - so do not start with crossflashing!
Heat up your PC to a maximum, but below the BenQ specs (max operating temp 45°C iirc but check on website) and do some simulations and real burns (test burns whatever).
Get some known good media (see media threads for this), write them and do disc quality scans on them. Compare to those posted! Dont worry too much as many posted scans are actually the best ppl had in dozens of burns probably. But be sure you are close!
PC: Be sure to run your writer, preferably ALONE AS MASTER on the 2nd IDE port, with an own cable, preferably on the end. Yes, some ppl say with 40pin ide cables, the end is for slave - thats BS! It is never a good idea to have open connectors with high frequency signals on them as that may introduce reflections. Then check if BIOS/Windows use the drive in UDMA 2 mode.
I think some ppl have even more ideas. Some of this may be overly cautious, but that is what you will want for a start. As soon as you know your drive is good, you can experiment - but start safe, start smart
