New NEC and Optiarc firmwares (unmodified and patched versions) available

About a week ago, several updated firmwares could be found on Optiarc’s website. But there were not only updates for Optiarc branded desktop drives but also some firmwares for older NEC drives which have not appeared on NEC’s own site so far although they seem to have been compiled some months ago already.

All these firmwares can be found along with bitsetting and RPC1 patches on our site. In detail you can find updates for the NEC ND-3551A (version 2.03), NEC ND-3571A (version 2.11), NEC ND-4551A (version 1-09), Optiarc AD-5170A (version 1.13), Optiarc AD-5170S (version 1.12), Optiarc AD-7170A (version 1.04), Optiarc AD-7170S (version 1.02), Optiarc AD-7173A (version 1-03) and Optiarc AD-7173S (version 1-02).

Please note that only the 4551A, 7170A and 7173A firmwares have been tested by us.

Thanks Liggy, grabbed the Optiarc AD-7173S (version 1-02).

Thanks, Liggy!
Grabbed the 4551A and 7170A firmwares.

Just burnt a disc with Optiarc AD-7173S (version 1-02), confirms all working right, bitsetting incl.

My ND-3500 is still going strong with 2.TG, is this drive officially discontinued now?

Not checked the status of f/w for this drive for a looong time, what was the last modded f/w for this drive anyway?

Thumbs up to NEC for making such a wonderfully long lasting drive

Firmware 2.TG is the latest Liggy & Dee firmware for the ND-3500AG, but there is a more recent official 2.1B firmware and a Liggy’s bitsetting version of the 2.1B firmware.

Thanks DrageMester, I’ll comapre the two and see if it’s worth updating!

I just added a few new firmwares to our site again.

Thanks for all your great work Liggy.:bow::clap:

I don’t have a “AD” drive in my setup, but you have been doing magic to our NEC’s for quite many years.
BTW, my old ND-3500 is still up and running on sons compu.

Thank you Liggy.

Hey Liggy, any news regarding AD 7530B? Heard that there are problems with gaining acces to the firmware.

Fine, just grabbed it (7203 - 1.04)
Do anyone know the differences between 1.0 and 1.04?
It seems that all writing strategies have changed, but I’m not glad.
I bought my 7203 last weekend and it does my R-DL (RICOHJPND01-067) and they are readable in my DW 1650.
Original Ricoh Media and also Benq (DAxon AZ2) have been burned exellently (scanned with DW 1650)

After Update to new FW (original from Nec) crappy D01-067 (MediaRange) will fail, even the results with AZ2 and CMC aAM3 (DVD-R) are less good as before, DW 1650 shows the double of faults, both C1 and C2.
It’s curiou s but the scans with AD-7203 show less much less faults as before., but still it can’t read poor burned media.
I’ve flashed back to version 1.0.

The 7530 drives don’t seem to be based on NEC architecture and I have no idea which commands are used to access these drives’ firmwares.

What’s the latest firmware for AD-7540A? 1.42b is newer than 1.74, but 1.42 is older than 1.74… i’m not sure how the numbering works.

My Aug 07 AW-G540A came with SONY 1.30. Where does this firmware sit in the newness scale?

wat about the laptop 7590 drives where are the firmware for those

The first number after the “.” shows the OEM that drive was made for. So if you have e.g. 1.01 and 1.02 then 1.30 is in no way related to the others. It could be newer than 1.02, older than 1.01 or maybe even somewhere in between. Check the firmware overview to get a hint on how old or new a specific firmware is.

I already tried to dump the firmware from on of these drives, but it looks like Optiarc made some changes and try to fool people who use the previous commands to get data out of the drive. Trying to dump the bootcode for example resulted in getting a bootcode for the NEC ND-3540A drive which very likely is not the one to be used on the 7590. :disagree:

In the meantime I had a few more ideas that might be worth trying to dump the firmware, but it will probably be very hard without having such a drive myself.

BTW Liggy…I finally have an AD-7590A drive in my new Dell Precision M6300 laptop. It came with the stock 1.01 firmware and I successfully used Binflash 1.44 to update to your bitsetting + fast firmware under Vista SP1 32-bit.

Thanks!

Great stuff!
