With the current issues with DL media availability, price, compatibility, and slooooooooow burn speed, the first generation of DL is going to be a flop due to issues with practicality. Methinks it'll be even less popular than -RW. The only people who will actually use it are those who want to use it for the sake of using it (my guess is that the vast majority of people wanting DL capabilities on their drive want it not for the sake of DL, but for the sake of bragging rights of having such a novelty); I'm willing to bet that most people will hold off on DL until at least the 2nd generation when faster media, better compatibility, and lower prices come around.
I'd be very interested to see just how many of the people going bonkers over the NEC DL conversion are people who would actually end up using it.
Of course, I can't speak for you, but I personally have no interest in DL. I will most likely burn a total of just one DL disc (for proof of concept) and never touch DL again until at least the 2nd generation of drives/media.
