Nero READ error

vbimport

#1

I have used a Sony DRU 830A DVD burner for over a year, and I burn allot of dvds. Recently, my burner began to crap out on me, getting very slow etc…so I replaced it with a new one, same model etc. Installed it, burned a dvd, and found that it would not play back, but WOULD play back in a stand alone dvd player. Ran Drive Check utility from Sony and the error log was a READ error, hardware failure. So I returned it and got another one. Installed it, same story. Will burn, will play in stand alone player, will NOT play in computer. Again, Drive Check says read error, hardware failure, and Nero log is posted below.
Reformatted my computer, installed Nero, burned a dvd, same problem.
Below is Nero error log, PLEASE HELP!

The “alleged” hardware error on your new player may not necessarily be that the drive is bad at all. It may be due to the last 2 versions of Nero itself (that are Vista capable [maybe]…) and how this “new” Nero seems to have compatibility issues with VIA chipsets in particular the Hyperion Pro 5.09A or 5.10a) series of drivers that include the VIA IDE BussMaster drivers.

I too recently did a fresh install of XP w/SP2 followed of course by installing the VIA “chipset drivers” aka the Hyperion Pro 5.10a package and other Onboard device drivers (LAN/SoundMax/etc) then afterward updated XP and installed only Office 2003,Quicktime,Real, DivX Pro (to have the major video/audio codecs) then installed the latest version of Nero. All the while I had zero problems in reading or writing (using the embedded XP limited burning function) to both of my Samsung DVD “burners” which are both “jumpered” as Masters with one on the Primary IDE and the other on the Secondary IDE since XP is on two Seagate SATAs (1rst Generation SATA’s) configured in a RAID-0 on the VIA VT8237 Controller.

Right after I installed Nero BAM! my newest Samsung S-182M during burning would fail 50% of the time and 100% of the time if I selected to Verify the Data written in Nero. The slightly older Samsung S-162L faired a little better but basically both drives were not reliable! I only use Verbatim media that worked fine before I installed Nero. I did notice that DVD-R’s where the session was still open did have read errors too AFTER Nero was instaled. No read errors prior to Nero being installed.

Befuddled to say the least since this was basically a clean install I used the Nero General Clean Tool for Nero 7 and after uninstalling it and rebooting when prompted I deleted the leftovers that still exist such as the Nero folders such as “Dummy”, “InfoTool”, “Nero Web”, “NeroDemo12550”, “nro.log”, “nro.tmp” —> that are in path C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp that the General Clean Tool misses!

Then proceeded with a fresh install and what do you know same thing! Failed Burning and Unreliable Reading!

Disgusted I then installed the newer Falcon or VIA PATA/SATA IDE Driver 1.60a package which is newer than the VIA PATA/SATA IDE 1.40a drivers that are included in the VIA Hyperion Pro package—No change!@!

Using the Nero 7 General Clean Tool I once again uninstalled Nero and after rebooting deleted the leftovers. Then I ran the Nero Clean pack (registry checker and driver cleantool) Interestingly both tools reported that errors were found and corrected…although the tools themselves did not specify what these “errors” were? Rebooting in-between when prompted. I also used the new XP statechangediag.exe tool to try and ascertain what changes were recorded by the XP System Restore Points with no luck…

This time when I installed Nero well what do you know…Everything works as it’s supposed to – Go figure ?

Sorry this is so longwinded but it might give you some clues on how to proceed without doing yet another format and reinstall of XP. Because I think there is nothing wrong with your hardware but that it is some serious software incompatibility at root here that is “masked” and appears as a hardware problem but in reality is a software based “bug”

I should have also stated that between the initial read error and re-formatting, I uninstalled Nero and installed CloneDVD. I also was unable to play a burned dvd in the computer but was able to play in stand alone. I did not use the tools you refer to to clean up after Nero. Could you or someone please then break down what I should software wise to correct the problem?
I’m assuming the likelihood of having 2 defective Sony burners in a row is pretty low. If not the burner itself, and not the OS, and not Nero…then what? The motherboard? Wouldn’t I have errors in the device manager if that were true? In addition, the burner WILL play a commercially produced DVD with no problems, and WILL play a CD…data, music…that I burn with it.

EDIT* Also, when I look at the DVDs properties, it shows as being in RAW format. Clearly, it isn’t because it plays back on a stand alone player.

#4

…I too use AnyDVD and CloneDVD but the “problems” with Nero occurred BEFORE I installed them and so I don’t think these programs are at play here…

From your Nero log I see that you are running two SATA’s either as standalones or in a RAID Array hence the “viamraid” port listed. So you do have a VIA “chipset”. If you did not install the latest Hyperion Pro 5.10 package here is the link. Also ingnore what the Nero log tells you that DMA is not enabled for your SATA’s on the VIA SATA Controller because thats FALSE! ----> DMA is enabled but because of the architecture which is a ISA to PCI Bridge for the VIA SATA/RAID Controller. Most software cannot detect the DMA capability but the VIA RAID Tool does correctly ascertain that DMA is enabled on SATA’s connected to the VIA Controllers

Version 5.10A of the Hyperion Pro drivers includes the following components:
INF V2.80A
AGP V4.60A
V-RAID V5.30C and RAID Tools v5.30
PATA/SATA IDE Driver V1.40A

http://www.viaarena.com/Driver/via_hyperionpro_v510a.zip

Then afterward update the PATA/SATA IDE driver to V.1.60A

The VIA PATA/SATA IDE Driver Package (previously known as the VIA MiniIDE Driver) features the VIA SATA Hot-Plug Filter driver, which supports VIA Hot-Plug Technology. For more information about this driver, please read the i

http://www.viaarena.com/Driver/via_pata_sata_+ide_v160a(20061101140444).zip

Then if you are willing …

The Nero7 General Clean Tool

Direct Link

ftp://ftp6.nero.com/tools/General-CleanTool.zip

and the Clean pack (registry checker and driver cleantool)

Instructions:

Download cleanpack.zip and extract the zipped files onto your hard disk using WinZip or WinRar. You should now have two files: Driver-CleanTool.exe and RegistryChecker.exe.
Run Driver-CleanTool.exe by double-clicking it. Driver CleanTool will remove all drivers and registry entries.
Confirm the deactivation of the drivers displayed in order to prevent known driver conflicts from reoccurring in the future. These drivers also exist with values in the Windows NT, 2000 and XP registries.
In order to confirm that these drivers are deactivated, you will need to run the RegistryChecker file.

Ok, I installed the Hyperion Pro drivers and updated the PATA/SATA IDE driver to V.1.60A. I uninstalled Nero and ran all the tools listed above. Installed Any DVD and clone dvd and could not play a dvd I burned. Clone DVD would not BURN a dvd either. I installed Nero and tried to burn a dvd and the log below is what happened. Now it won’t burn either!

May be you are using bad and crappy media try to use brand name media see what effect that has in your problem.

#7

I’m using Verbatim media.

#8

Turns out it was a bad drive…2 in a row from Best Buy, exact same model. Sony had a bad day at the factory it seems. Bought an ASUS DRW-1612BL and its working great.

#9

Actually Ive had the same problem with my Sony DRU-830A
reads burned dvd disc as empty, file system says raw format
It all has to do with UDFS and CDFS If your Windows doesnt support these
then its not able to read this
Instead of reading what is available it reads what was last mounted giving errors
