Nero problem - seeing wrong drive!

Hi,

I have just got Nero V5.5 and am having a few problems.
I have an external Acer USB CDRW 4x4x6.
I have installed Nero hoping to simply copy files from my computer on to a CD.
However, Nero software is only recognising my internal CD/DVD drive - and not the CDRW drive.
This means it won’t let me burn stuff on to my blank CDs.

I am not sure if this is significant, but InCD doesn’t seem to be working. The icon in the taskbar has a yellow blob with a red exclamation mark over it and it is not clickable. When I try to open it from the Program Files folder it just says that it is already running.

Please help … as I had major problems with DirectCD (now uninstalled) and really need to put some stuff on to a CD!!!

In case its not obvious I am not familiar with burning and have never used Nero/InCD before.

Thanks in advance,

Scott.

is the external drive functional as a reader? EX, does it show up in “my computer”?

Yes it does show up.

My internal is D: and the external CDRW is E:.

Any ideas?

Scott.

please provide the specs of your system

What do you want to know?

Scott.

Model burner, for starters. Which version of Windows? What other CD-related software is on your system, etc?

Ok,

I use windows 98.

The external USB CD Writer is an Acer CDRW 4x4x6.

My internal drive is Hitachi DVD-ROM GD-2500 (this is the one that the Nero software is looking at).

The only software I have installed is the Nero and InCD (this came with Nero). I have previously had Adaptec DirectCD installed, but that didn’t work properly (the formatting was buggered up) so I uninstalled it. Not sure if that has affected any other files?

Any ideas? Need to know anything else?

Thanks guys

Scott

well, first things first, try to update nero to currrent version at www.nero.com

I have downloaded the latest version of Nero and InCD and it makes no difference.

The only recorder that it can see is the Image recorder and the only drive it can see is my internal. Do you have to add a recorder or something?

Any ideas?

Scott.

If your recorder is a 4406U it is listed as supported by Nero. Usually, when you remove ECDC and/or DirectCD, a lot of dlls and registry keys are left behind, which probably makes InCD believe that DirectCD is still installed. You might try a google search for uninstalling all parts of the Roxio software. This one looked most promising:

http://www.cdrinfo.com/tips/cdr_and_win2k.shtml

For what it’s worth, in my experience, DirectCD works better than InCD which I could never get to work correctly for long in either 98, 98SE or XP Pro. As they say, your mileage may vary. Another thing you might try is to download and install a copy of Feurio. It will tell you exactly what cdr dlls are installed and who they belong to.

That link you post is for win2K OS - as I said above I have win 98.

Also, I am not all that technically minded so forgiv me if I am a little slow.

From what i understan it is likely that some system files were left behind by DirectCD and so I need to get rid of them. Once I have InCD will work?

I will look for a program to do this, unless you can recommend one for win98?

Also you say

“If your recorder is a 4406U it is listed as supported by Nero”

Is it the image recorder you are talking about or my external cdrw drive? I am still confused as to why the external drive is not showing up in the drives list in Nero???

Oh and for the record I had major probs with DirectCD. It said it had formatted my CDr/CDRW’s and I could drag and drop files on to it, but when i tried to drag and drop it said access denied. I tried allsorts of CDs but it was cack and never changed. Maybe it was a duff copy?

Scott.

As you can see it shows my Internal drive as adapter 2 and my external as adapter 3. A lot of info is marked as ‘unknown’. Does this mean anything to anyone? What do I do?

Cheers

I understand you have 98. The instructions I cited are for Win2000, but the files listed will be the same. Sounds like you might have other problems if DirectCD never worked for you either. Just what those problems might be are not clear to me from your post. Try cleaning out those extraneous files and start new with InCD. There is also a program that others have touted for this type of situation called RegCleaner. I have no experience with, but others have said it helped remove installations of Roxio software. I have had success with VOB InstantWrite which is also a packet writing software like DirectCD and InCD and it appears to be less finicky than those two.

The image recorder Nero is referring to is a file that the program can write a cd image file to on your hard drive. I don’t know why Nero is not seeing your external usb burner. Have you looked under Recorder in Nero and tried to select the external drive?

When I go to Choose Recorder the only one there is Image Recorder.
When I go to Medium-Info the only one in the drop down menu at the bottom is the Internal Drive.

AAAAAAGGH!!!

And the burner does appear in Control Panel/Device Manager right?

Sorry if I wasn’t clear. Just to clarify:

In My Computer the following drives are shown:

C:
A:\ - floppy
D:\ Internal CDROM/DVD
E:\ External USB CDRW Drive

In Device manager under CD ROM Drives - both the D:\ and the E:\ are present and correct.

The CDRW Drive is in perfect working order.

Scott.

Weird. Something is stopping Nero from seeing it. Have you deleted those Roxio files?
