Nero failed while burning to hard disk folder

I was authoring a DVD with Nerovision Express The original video source was an AVI (DivX). I had set it up to burn to a hard disk folder, instead of to a DVD. (I always do it that way, so that I can play the DVD files in WinDVD before I waste a DVD blank on it.)

Everything worked normally until the about an hour into the transcoding process – at which time I got an error message. The message said to check the log.

I saved the log and found what appears to be a description of an error, but I have no idea what it means. (See below.)

I’m running Windows XP SP-1, 1GB RAM and there’s plenty of free space on my hard drive.

Anyone know what’s going on here?

@ uesjd
I googled for over an hour for this error and there are many with this error and no firm solutions. You may want to check out this current thread, tho.

Thanks for that thread. I tried the suggestion - uninstalling DivX - and it didn’t help. I just tried it with a totally different AVI file and it happened again. However, the first AVI file was able to be encoded using myDVD and that makes me think the problem is with NeroVision, not with the AVI itself.

I emailed Ahead tech support but of course I haven’t gotten a response from them.

Looks like NVE is going to be worthless from now on.

@ uesjd
Concerning that thread, I was more interested at the page file enlargement idea at the very end of the thread than the divx idea, as your system was already processing the files, not getting hung up at the beginning. You might want to give a look into windows task manager to see your usage during the operation

OK, I didn’t realize that. I’ll give it a shot, although I am sure my page file is the same as it was a week ago when Nero was able to handle AVI transcoding just fine.

I just tried expanding the page file to 4096 MB and it didn’t help – I still got the same crash as before. Same error message, same description in the nerovision log.

I also totally uninstalled Nero, used the Nero Clean Tool, then reinstalled. It didn’t help.

I think I’m stuck until I get a response from Nero tech support – and I’m not holding my breath for that.

@ uesjd
Sorry these suggestions didn’t work for you. If you do find a solution, please report back as you may help many others.

Just a small heads-up concerning the page file thing. You may notice the time it takes to shut down your system has increased. I think it may be because of the larger pagefile config, as the backup has more room to write to. This happened to me. After I enlarged mine to 1.5GB(with 1gbRAM…the old ‘1.5XRam’ rule) shutdown took an extra couple minutes(yikes!), so I dropped mine back to 700MB and it shut down much faster. I used task manager to see how much I would use in a heavy-use scenario and it was around this 700MB figure.

I’m gonna guess the issues lies in the DiVX file(s) you are using. IMHO, it looks like its having a problem transcoding the video file into a DVD video friendly format. Try a different video file and see if it gets transcoded. If it works, then that is your problem.

Setting a static pagefile is a bad idea. I have a good link explaining this, but not sure if I can post it.

@ dreamliner77, all
Unless I am misunderstanding(which is possible:))I don’t think it is ‘static’ as it is ‘maximum’. However it can be argued that the page file is static and that may be a good thing in some cases to ward against fragmentation. I got much of my info from here , however the other post I linked to in this thread followed that reasoning.

I don’t really want to stray from the thread topic, but I will read whatever link you post and merely agree or agree-to-disagree here and leave it at that.

I’ve tried several different DixV files so far and all have resulted in the same error.

I have a Plextor video capture device that can produce certified DivX files. I’m going to capture one and try to transcode it in NVE and see what happens.

The DivX file I captured with the Plextor worked with NVE.

So then I went back to one of the DivX files that had given me problems. I ran it through VirtualDub to recompress it – just in case there was something wrong with it. Then I ran it through NVE to try to make a DVD out of it. And this time it worked.

So there was something about that DivX file that wasn’t quite right. I still have no idea what it might have been, but apparently running it through VirtualDub made it sufficiently “normal” to let NVE deal with it.

Yup, I had the same issues. I now use River Past’s VideoCleaner to run any video files before I transcode em to DVD. It actually transcodes much faster when I do this beforehand.

I am having the same problem. I now have a copy of Virtual Dub and all the DivX and XVID codecs I think I need.
What I need to know is how to work Virtual Dub
What do I do to fix my AVI so that NVE will transcode it?

Cheers

It takes longer to shut down as you have Windows set up to clear the swapfile on shutdown.

Thanks for input I was have the same problem. I think you great bunch of folks have helped me. I’ve wasted a bunch DVDs
