Nero constantly gives "Focus or tracking error"

vbimport

#1

Hi.

This problem did not exist until 2 weeks ago or so. Last night I uninstalled Nero. I used cleaning tool too. Then I did a firmware update of my LG gsa 4160 b . Then I installed Nero version 6.6.0.8a. But still I get the same error when I try to write a data DVD : Focus or tracking error.

I’ve been using TDK DVD-Rs and +Rs. And many have been wasted.

Here is the Info (about the last DVD-R that has been later wasted) from the DVdidentifier :

PLEASE HELP ME. Thanks in advance.

Note : I said I constantly get this error but actually it fails to burn 2 times out of 3. So it’s not a constant problem.

#2

Do you try another media brand or creatin a video dvd?
So there could be a few reasons…
Maybe a bad drive?!
I would try to downgrade nero 6.6.0.8 to an older version or
checkin the firmware of your drive.
Oh I forgot checkin the dma in device manager I saw
dma is off in your error log.

#3

Thank you very much for your rapid reply rapid fire.

I have just upgraded the firmware of my drive. and the drive is not older than 1.5 months, so I cannot imagine it to be a bad drive unless I bought it with the defect. But I have to say that this string of failures in burning started to happen in the last two weeks. No new software and hardware have been installed before or inbetween this time…

Could you please tell me how I can enable DMA.

I looked in the device manager but couldn’t figure out from where and how I can enable DMA.

Thanks in advance.

And please keep communicating with me through this post.

#4

Under device manager you can check the IDE-Controller not the DVD/CD Rom devices!
There you’ll find in Secondary Channel options for device 0 and device 1.
You’ll see for example PIO Mode and DMA if available, if there’s pio mode delete it and
set DMA if available then reboot your system. Also you could see the DMA status if it’s
on or not in Nero’s System Infos at the option Configuration.
Also there’s a thread in Recording Hardware Forum.

#5

Thanks a lot again for replying.

I turned DMA on for both of my drives (CD-Rom and DVD-RAM). Thank you for the info.

I do not have any blank dvd-rs left so I cannot test it with the new config. What exactly is DMA?

Also, although the last dvd burning failed with the “Focus or tracking error”, I realized just now that it has been written indeed! I compared the file sizes of all 6 folders on the “failed” DVD with the original folders on my hard disk and they are exactly the same!

But the comparison of “Size on disk” values differ slightly from the originals. Shouldn’t the “size on disk” value of a folder on a DVD and and hdd differ naturally as they are different sort of “disks”???

Do you think I can rely on the folder sizes being exactly the same and delete the originals from my hdd? Or is a “failed” dvd is a failed dvd after all and the sizes of the folders do not matter even if they match with the originals?

Thanks in advance if your reply. You’ve been very helpful.

Regards.

#6

DMA=Direct Memory Access
It means directly data transfer for example from your drive into your memory.
U-Dma allows higher transfer rates so it’s better for your drive tu use this.
The size of my backups are exactly the same on the hdd!
Now dma is on the next thing I would check the cables, another nero version and new
media brand. I wouldn’t delete the files on your hdd.
The point why I said maybe a bad drive I had one with the same errors but it could
also be a bad batch of media cause it happened on my other drive.

#7

You said “downgrade the version of Nero.” I had just upgraded to end these problems. Anyway what version do you recommend?

Is there a website comparing dirves’ compatibality with certain brands? I mean for my LG what should be the best brand?

Thanks a lot again.

#8

At the moment I use 6.6.0.6 but there’s also no problem wtih 6.6.0.8.a.
I said this cause to see are there any changes to solve your problem.
Media I still prefer Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim. Taiyos you could also find as a
Fuji brand but look that’s Made in Japan!
Websites you’re still here have a look at this
I forgot and here

#9

OK. News:

I upgraded the firmware, I upgraded the nero version, enabled DMA, raised buffer size from 71 to 80, didn’t run another application along with it… But 2 other dvds are wasted!!!

I’m fed up! I’m writing a mail to LG. If they cannot help me I’m going to create Havoc at their headquarters!

Any more ideas?

#10

@ meurglys0
Have you tried running a laser-lens-cleaning disc? It may be just a dirty lens…

#11

Agree with laser lens cleaning disc.
If this wouldn’t help I would try another app to burn.
For example burnin some images with dvd decrypter to check the
situation with this prog.

#12

Ok but I have searched for 2 hours on the web and I’ve seen many people had this problem with LG drives. One person claims he has taken the drive to service and they had given him another gsa160b agreeing that it was defected. He coms home and the same problem happens! He goes back and changes it to gsa4163b and the problem is solved.

I cannot understand; if the drive was defected then it wouldn’t burn 20 dvds successfully. If it was my configuration or pc that was faulty, then it wouldn’t have been able to successfully burn the 20 dvds. So a dirty lens seems logical but again would a lens become dirty and need a cleaner in less than 2 months and only after burning 20 dvds?

I’ve read someone on some other forum mention that the dealer said 60 % of Lg drives have been taken back tihs year!

I’m about to lose my head. And the worst thing is I’ve only got 2 gb out of 160 gb space left on my hdds and I need to urgently back up to allow more music to come. Let’s forget about more music, but I’m running out of space!

How much would a lens cleaner cost?

Thanks for all of your useful help!

#13

That’s why I said maybe a defectly drive.
I’m from Europe I paid for mine about 10 eur.
In $ could be the same price.

#14

You can find a lens cleaner for about $10 US, just about anywhere…

#15

I’m skipping the lens cleaner and going right now to the service. Let’s see what happens…

I hope the fact that I have upgraded the firmware doesn’t become a problem.

#16

Alright now! They detected the defect and are going to give me on Monday a new GSA 4163!

Thanks to everybody for all the help…

I hope GSA 4163 is better…

Regards.
