Nero 7 Failed Dual Layer Burn

vbimport

#1

I am trying to burn video files that I have ripped to my hard drive. I am using Verbatim Dual Layer DVD+R disks and my burner is BenQ W1655. I have burnt data onto DL with the same configuration just fine, but today when I tried to burn these DVD files onto the DL Verbatim, it gave me an error and now the DL DVD is ruined. These media are quite expensive and I can’t risk the same mistake again.:frowning: I am using Nero 7 and I am providing the log below. What is the problem? Is it the software? Should I get the latest Nero?

Are these the newer Verbatim DL disks? I don’t see a mid code anywhere, but you were burning at 8x, so I’m assuming these are the 8x speed MKM003 Verbatim disks. The log file shows repeated Key-Medium errors, which means an incompatibility between disks and burner.

I would think the older 2.4-4x speed MKM001 disks would be more compatible with your burner, and I wouldn’t burn them faster than 4x in your BenQ.

Many here at cdfreaks prefer to burn DL media with a free burning program called ImgBurn. It has proved to be a good program for setting the layer break correctly when burning to dual layer disks.

As for an immediate solution with your current disks, I’d try burning with ImgBurn at 4x. I’d first try a single layer burn and see if that works properly. Sometimes repeated errors will drop you into PIO mode on a burner. Your log file shows the BenQ has DMA enabled, but just to be on the safe side I might try testing the drive before going any further.

If you need guides to using ImgBurn, look on their forum: http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showforum=4

Burn process started at 8x

Is it the software? Should I get the latest Nero?

Hi Excelsius:

I’ll start it off. I don’t think your drive/firmware can handle 8x speed and I doubt it’s a software issue although there are people who would rather use other software, especially for DL media (layerbreak issues). Upgrading to Nero 8 for this problem would probably be a waste of money and I wouldn’t touch Nero 9 until the product is stable. You could try burning at a slower speed 2.4X and see if the results are positive.

If there are firmware issues, other members can direct you to a resolution (e.g. cross-flashing).

Thanks guys. It seems the problems is resolved now. First, I upgraded the firmware to the most recent version. Second, I dropped the speed to 4x. The interesting thing is that my DVD was not damage at all and I was able to use the same one to burn the opera. Now my dilemma is trying to understand whether it was the firmware or the slower speed that resolved this issue. I suspect it must have been the firmware. I have several more DLs to burn. Let’s see if I get any problems.

OK, I am burning at 8x time now. So the issue must have been the firmware. This is great.

If 8x produces lesser quality, please let me know. I want the highest quality burn and am not sure whether 8x is good for this.
