Nero 6.6.0.16 - does my log make sense? Write error

I just bought a HP640 16x dvd-rw with lightscribe. It works great for CDs; I haven’t tried the lightscribe. However, I’ve not been able to burn a single DVD without the same nonsense - basically “Write error” … “Writing short lead-out” … “Write error” … “Could not perform end of Disc-at-once” … “Burn process failed at 4x (5,540 KB/s)”.

I tried something new and called HP support, but they were no help.

Does anyone know why this is happening?

Ideas? I’m building an impressive collection of coasters and can’t wait to get a good one.

The only thing that comes to my mind is noticing that the DMA is listed here as “off”, but when I go into device manager for my parallel ATA controller, my setting is actually “Let BIOS select transfer mode” with “Ultra DMA 2 - Ultra33” selected with a checkmark in the greyed out box. ie. what I think it should be.

I’ve done a tonne of reading and searching the web and can’t find anything conclusive about the source of these “Sense Key: 0x03 (KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR)” errors.

I’m thinking that if I don’t hear otherwise in the next day or two, I’ll bite the bullet and take the drive (Hewlett Packard) back to exchange for an equivalent of a different brand (BenQ).

Does that sound like a good idea under the circumstances? Or might it do nothing for me?

You might try using Microsoft’s IDE driver instead of the nVidia IDE driver.

uninstall nforce and reinstall it without the nvidia ide driver , also check dma settings in bios its best to have it on auto

means the medias you use or more correctly the mediacode they use (MXLRG02) isnt supported in your drives firmware , updating firmware may resolve it but if not then youll have to use other medias i recommend taiyo yuden/verbatim

I’ve taken all your suggestions to heart. However I still have problems:

  1. The firmware was already at the most updated version to begin with. I flashed it again just to be sure, but there was no change.

  2. The DVD media is high quality Maxell DVD-R. DVD Identifier describes it as such.

  3. Rolling back the IDE drivers to the Microsoft ones means DMA is now listed as “on” in simulation burns, but there is no change in media recognition.

  4. I’ve noticed that despite this being a 16x burner, Nero does not let me select my DVD burn speed and gives 4x as the only option. It gives a full range of options for CD burning. When I put in a DL disc, it defaulted to 2.4x. Is this just Nero recognizing how fast it thinks each medium can go (even if during the burn the burner doesn’t know what to do)?

I am almost 100% certain I’ll just exchange this HP drive for a BenQ. I’m really thinking a new drive brand/model might work better. Comments?

use other medias your drives firmware abiusly doesnt support that mediacode , i recommend taiyo yuden they make the best quality medias and have very wide compatbility if your from usa you can em from rima if from europe svp or digitalpromo if from canada blankmedia , the medias are defently the problem they arent compatible with the drive get TY medias and it will probably work 100%

as for the speed , 4x is likely due to generic write strategy alot of burners have slow speed for that strategy (that strategy is used for non supported mediacodes in hope to produce an acceptable burn) , im sure that with no media in the drive or with media thats supported in firmware youll see all of the speeds , as for 2.4x that is normal currently all DL medias are 2.4x also the drive itself supports 2.4x max for DL and nero determines the writing speeds by the firmware (the firmware have a list of allowed speeds for each mediacode) , oh and you might find it amusing your drive is a rebadged benq 1625

I do find the BenQ origins of the drive quite amusing. I will follow your advice, phil, as you seem to know what you are doing quite well.

However, I find the lack of media compatibility somewhat disconcerting. If I understand the issue, the firmware for the drive is simply not capable of utilizing my Maxell DVD-R discs. What bothers me is that this firmware was last updated in June on Hewlett Packard’s website. If this is an issue with and ALL DVD Writer 640i 16x Lightscribe drives could not use Maxell (and possibly other) media, they’ve had months to fix it and offer an update. However, they have not. Why? Is Maxell media just not considered important? Or is irresponsibility with updates common among drive manufacturers like HP?

I will order the TY medias, because I like the idea of using the best. But I would really like a drive where I don’t have to worry about these things and can just use whatever, like I can with CD-R.

If I were to switch it to a 100% true BenQ drive, would I get BenQ’s firmware with greater updates and the better ability to handle whatever I throw at it?

Update - I read up on cross-flashing and my drive is now officially a BenQ DVD DD DW1625 on the recent BBHA firmware. Still, it gives me no media recognition for the Maxell discs. I suppose they are just garbage. I find that strange though considering Maxell is a pretty big company.

I’ll try and get those TY’s ASAP to find out for sure, and I suppose there would be no reason to take this back for a BenQ (seeing as that’s what I have now).

LAST QUESTION - Now that I have a BenQ drive, can I use regular BenQ firmware updates? ie. There is a BBIA update available, but I don’t have the .CVT, only the BBIA.exe from BenQ. Can I run it without worry if I’m operating fine with BBHA?

I got my hands on some 8x DVD+R Verbatim discs. Now I get a different issue. Nero recognizes the media and allows me 2.4x, 4x, and 8x burn. I burned at 4x and got a fixation error (but somehow didn’t damage the disc in the process - still blank). I tried again at 2.4x and got the same.

What now? Isn’t Verbatim supposed to be pretty reliable? Shouldn’t this work fine?

Is the new drive firmware the latest and can you do simulation burns to save your discs?
