Need To Confirm BenQ1620 Defective - Please Help

Hello All,

I’m still plugging away at getting my recently replaced BenQ1620Pro (bulk version) to burn DVDs, but still NG. My original post is located here:
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=154343
which gives a full account, but to cut to the chase: In attempt to get this drive, which is running firmware G7V9, working properly; I blew away the system and re-installed WinXp Pro/SP2. Nothing is on this system but the base with DVD Decrypter and a few ISOs on an external drive. 1620 is master on secondary IDE, system sees it as a DVD/RW (slave is a basic CD-ROM) Can read/write CDs ok, but the dang thing just won’t get off the ground and write anything DVD. The point to keep in mind is that the same drive model, in the same h/w config, using the same batch of media previously worked just fine… until it was RMA’ed for a faulty tray. The old drive was running that confusing G7Z9 fw, and this one is G7V9.

Error is: “Interpretation: Check Condition”
“Failed to Write Sectors 0 - 31 - Write Error”

I tried test1 at MAX write, and a second test at 2.4x, both failed.
Is my only conclusion now that indeed this drive is faulty and must go back?

As a last resort, it’s always good to try a drive in another PC. Do you have one at your disposal (friend, neighbor, one guy used his church, whatever) to rule out PC hardware/software issues?

-Evan-

Yup, we have a few. I think I’ll give that a try on an older Win2K family workstation we have tomorrow - (god forbid I hijack my teenage son’s AIM engine!). Getting tired now! I’ll report back…

Well… I brought this drive into work and installed it in my work PC also running WinXP and same exact problem. I guess I’ll be giving BenQ Tech Support a call for a replacement. Just to satisfy them though, I’ll get some other media anyway and try it, but I’m 99% sure that’s not the problem.
