Need help interpreting KProbe results

Greetings all. I’m new to this whole DVD burning world and need some help. I’ve been reading CDFreaks for a couple of weeks now, and I’m learning some things, but am still very ignorant on many others. Normally, I would search 'til I’m blue in the face before asking this question, but I’m in somewhat of a hurry to get an answer. I don’t have internet access at home, so I have to ask questions and things at work. Further, I bought a 411S from Best Buy, which is about an hour from home, and if I have to return it, I do it on my way home from work. Which is why I’m kinda in a hurry for an answer. If I need to take it back, I want to do it today.

I downloaded KProbe (*.26) yesterday and did some initial testing on my drives last night. I’ve got both a 411S and a 401S (from Wal-Mart a couple of weeks ago). On both drives, I did Write tests on CD-R and CD-RW, Transfer tests using CD-R (an almost full 700Mb), and attempted Write tests on DVD+R/+RW. Here are the results:

401S Write CD-R

I’m concerned about the drops. Does that suggest a faulty drive or media?

401S Write CD-RW

401S Write DVD+R

401S Transfer CD-R

411S Write CD-R

411S Write CD-RW

411S Transfer CD-R

Here is some information about the media:

Some Notes:

Both drives are using latest firmware. 0F for the 411S and 0J for the 401S.

Neither drive would do a Write test using DVD+RW (media supplied with drives).

The 411S would not do the Write test using DVD+R. I thought it was a bad disc, but then did the test with it in the 401S. All the 411S would do is lock up. Had to cycle the power on my box to get it back.

The 401S actually wrote to the media during the DVD+R Write test! I didn’t realize it after the first disk, but when the 411s failed to do anything with the media, I put it in the 401S and did the test again. I stopped the test part way through, and when I took the media out, I noticed that it had been written to. I then checked with RecordNow DX, and sure enough, the disk was used. So I lost two DVD+R discs to the 401S.

I actually tried to write some real data to a DVD+RW in the 411S. I have about 1.5 Gb of digital photos that I tried to burn, but part way through, there was an error. Unfortunately, I didn’t write it down. At any rate, the 411S failed to write the DVD+RW.

I’m sorry for such a long post. Basically, I’m wondering if I should take the 411S back to Best Buy because it won’t do the DVD+R/+RW writes. Also, should I take the 401S back to Wal-Mart because of the drops in CD-R writing?

Any help very much appreciated.

Peace,
Phillip

I suggest you try the DVD+RW disc with the “Create data disc” function in Nero CD-Speed to see the performance curve there.

You may also try with CD-R in the LDW-401S with cd speed.

Get latest version 2.11 from www.cdspeed2000.com

The LiteOn drives went back. My DVD experience thus far has included two LDW-401s, one LDW-411, one LDW-451, a BTC 1004 something-or-other, and now two Sony DRU-510As. The Sony drives don’t have the speed ratings that the LiteOns do, but they work (at least for me). Plus, normally $180, Office Depot currently has $10 off at the register along with 2 $30 mail-in rebates, to bring the price down to $110 (excluding tax).

I’m going to take the KProbe images offline now.

Peace,
Phillip
