Need help buying first burner

Hi I know these kinds of questions are asked a lot around here but i have been reading reviews for the past 5 days trying to figure out what to get and am getting frustrated

These are the only dvd burners available inb my area(price in Canadian dollars)

1.Liteon 811s-$149.00
2.Sony dru 530A-$179.00
3.LG 801b-$179.00
4.Plextor 708A-$189.00

I don’t want to back up games just movies and woulkd like to know out of these 4 drives you all recommend

Thanx

I am surprised you cannot find an NEC 2500A or 2510A in Canada??
The best buy right now IMHO.

1.Liteon 811s-$149.00

This is a last-generation burner that produces poor quality burns on even the best media. Not recommended.

2.Sony dru 530A-$179.00

This drive is an OEM OptoRite DD0401. It’s not a bad drive and probably the best on your list.

3.LG 801b-$179.00

Another last-generation drive. You’re better off with an LG GSA-4082B as it has 8x -R and 8x +R support.

4.Plextor 708A-$189.00

Too expensive and and is supposed to be quite media-picky. Not recommended unless you have a big wallet! Even if you could afford this drive, I would recommend the 712A instead for it’s 12x +R and 8x -R support.

My personal recommendations are the NEC ND-2500A and the Pioneer DVR-107D.

I agree with Terminal - If those are the ones you are considering, go with the Sony. From what I understand, the Plextor truly is quite picky. I have the 107D, and have no problems recommending it. Particularly now that the prices are dropping.

Of the choices, the Sony is probably the best one. Not spectacular in any regard, but not media picky either.
