Need Advice on DVD Burner

Ok, I'm looking to get a dvd burner, not sure if I want to get a DVD-R, DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, or what other else formats that are currently out there. Basically, I want to be able to copy data DVD's and to backup copies of my DVD's.

I want to make sure the DVD's are readable in my PC's dvd-rom as well as my dvd player conneted to my TV.

I live in the U.S., so if you have any recommendations, please limit them to those models that can be purchased here in the U.S.

I read on http://news.com.com/2100-1023-828449.html that the movie industry is working furiously with hardware makers to try to incorporate copy protection at the hardware level. I'd like to get one before that happens.

Problem is there is no universal standard and the wrong choice could be obsolete. I would not touch DVD RAM with a barge pole look for a drive with DVD-R and DVD-RW to probably give you the best compatibility, but remeber it can also be affected by the player itself.
