Need advice for a new Blu-Ray burner

Hello everyone.
I am planning to buy soon my first blu-ray writer, which I intend to use for data archiving. My problem is that I read a lot of bad reviews about the poor quality on the new burners and also, in my country (Romania), the offer of burners available for sale is very limited. Tests and ideas I found on club myce forum are indeed helpful and, after a lot of reading I am inclining to go for Pioneer BDR-209EBK (http://www.shop4pc.ro/bluray-writer-pioneer-bdr209ebk-bdxl-sata-3d-negru-retail-pack-p-40123.html), but it looks like every unit available today have it’s shortcomings, so I can’t be very sure if this is the right decision at this point.

That being said, I want my new internal Blu-Ray burner to have (ideally):

  • Importance 1: Very good write quality for blu-ray discs and dvd’s
  • Importance 2: Possibility to write M-DISCs
  • Importance 3: Possibility to verify the quality of the recordings (using Nero DiscSpeed for example)

Other then that I do not care of speed, noise, price, looks, lightscribe, brand or anything else.

Here are a list with all blu-ray burners available in my area. Which do you think is best for wrting blu-rays, M-DISC blu-rays and dvd’s at best quality?

LG BH16NS40
ASUS BC-12D2HT
ASUS BW-16D1HT
Pioneer BDR-209DBK
Pioneer BDR-209EBK
Pioneer BDR-S09XLT

Any comments or ideas are welcome. Thank you.

I’d buy one of the Pioneer drives, as I don’t need DVD-RAM and BD-R TL/XL even the D model would be ok for me. The E model can write those, so does the XLT which comes with a shiny front panel.
None of those can verify the write quality of BD-Rs though.

Best quality writers for Blu-ray and DVD’s on your list are the Pioneer drives.

For M disc compatibility look at this page: http://www.mdisc.com/m-ready/

I don’t keep up with Asus drives, but the BW-16D1HT is apparently a rebadged LG BH16NS40, and you’d be better off buying the LG, since they have a better history of new firmware with that drive.

None of the drives listed will do quality scans of media as far as I am aware. The ASUS BC-12D2HT is a combo drive and will not write to Blu-ray discs, it will only read BD media, so you should not consider it.

I understand, thank you for response.

In the M-DISC m-ready list is only Pioneer BDR-209DBK, and not EBK. I read somewhere on this forum, that the two drives are pretty much the same with only difference that EBK can write BD-R TL/XL and EBK don’t, like Oinker said, so, Pioneer BDR-209EBK should be able to write M-DISC’s too, but can anyone confirm that? Support for BD-R TL/XL will be nice if sometimes these kind of discs will become widely available, but for me at this point FULL support for M-DISC is a lot more important.

I intend to write a lot on M-DISC’s, so, if Pioneer BDR-209EBK FULLY supports it I will go for it. Anyone can confirm it though?

After some searching I think I found the answer to my question in this thread: http://club.myce.com/f179/millenniata-m-disc-bd-r-ritek-336254/
Thanks czary2mary1 and bilditup1 for tests.

I will go for Pioneer BDR-209EBK.

Hello,

Here you can see that BDR209EBK supports M-DISC bluray disc
http://pioneer.jp/device_e/product-e/ibs/device_e/dev00002r_e.html#BDR-209EBK

But please observe that is supports only M-DISC Bluray disc and not also M-DISC DVD. For M-DISC DVD you can buy a cheap new LG drive, or … if you have enough money  buy also one newer LG Bluray writer
I hope you can get that 209EBK trying to buy it from Romania.

For a bluray scanner unit I recommend anything you can find from LiteON iHES108, iHES208 (combo units) and LiteON iHBS writers.
It can be difficult to find some units like these but here you go:

Good luck!

Thanks a lot for the info Vasy. I did not know about M-DISC DVD but I was interested in M-DISC BluRay annyway, not DVD, so, Pioneer BDR-209EBK should be good for me. I ordered the unit and I am expecting it tomorrow.

About bluray scanner unit, unfortunately there are none for sale in Romania and most of the ebay and amazon sellers won’t send anything to Romania because of bad reputation. I will try to find a solution; right now I don’t see any.

Firmware update and tests with this unit here:

Thanks for posting your impressions. I’m also looking for a burner but the lack of quality scans in these drives is disappointing. There’s just no way I would burn important backups on blu ray and not know the burn quality.

Same here. There’s just no way I would burn important backups on blu ray and not know the burn quality.

Fortunately I bought a unit made in 2012, following the advice of a senior member of Club Myce, an Blu-Ray ASUS BW-12B1ST that was a LiteOn unit rebadged (LiteOn iHBS112 2). I did a firmware rewrite and I transformed the ASUS in a full-fledged LiteOn iHBS112 2 that is able to do quality scans.

Now I just hope my units to last forever…

I have a chance to buy either iHBS112 -115 or LG BH16NS55. What is the reason you’re not using your iHBS112 for burning? Is burn quality lower than your new drive?

I have no idea yet. I recorded BluRay discs with my both units, but write quality was bad at both, not because of the drives, but because of the media (estelle blurays of both, 25 Gb and 50 Gb are very, VERY poor quality).

So, right now I have no idea what drive writes better.
