Need a blu ray reader for my LAPTOP

Hi all,

After failing to get any joy from ASUS regarding the capricious nature of the factory-fitted LG/Hitachi HL-DT-ST BDDVDRW CT21N drive (sometimes it recognises BD and/or self-burnt discs, sometimes it doesn’t, etc…) I have decided to invest in a replacement drive.

I think I need to specify that it should have it’s own specific driver, and not rely on the Windows legacy driver, which seems to be at least part of the problem I am currently experiencing.

I am reluctant to purchase an LG drive to replace an LG drive, but this seems to be one of the only manufacturers of affordable internal drives for a laptop.

Can anyone suggest a decent, reliable drive for around £100 (that’s about $150US)

Many thanks

Manufacturer drivers for optical drives don’t exist since these are part of the operating system.
Playback issues are either related to

  • software
  • difficulties to read certain media (perhaps poor discs)
  • copy protections
