NEC2500A problems - can not read what it burned

Hello,

I have just purchased a NEC 2500A (firmware 1.062003121900). I also have a Sony DRU500a and 2 liteon 166s DVDroms.

I am using RITEKG04 dvds:

0000 : 01 40 c1 fd 9e d8 52 00 02 76 0e 14 88 9a 80 00 .@…R…v…
0010 : 03 52 49 54 45 4b 47 00 04 30 34 00 00 00 00 00 .RITEKG…04…
0020 : 05 88 80 00 00 00 01 00 06 08 12 11 86 67 80 00 …g…

Using NERO 6.3.0.3

The problem I am having is many of the G04 are burning (at 4x), but failing on the validation. After reading a few threads this might be NERO at fault so I try and read the files back onto my hard drive using the NEC and I get CRC errors, same with both of the Liteon166 but the Sony reads it fine (and the files appear intact, they are video files)

I then do a DVD read test with dvdinfopro and the NEC finds errors and the sony does not.

Reading some threads in this forum I figure I might have some marginal G04s, but I would expect an error found on the NEC should be also found on the Sony.

I am puzzled as to why the NEC can not read it’s own burn back (and neither can the Liteon166s), but the sony can. The Sony is a older (and much slower) drive, maybe this has something to do with it? Then that would point to the media or the NEC.

Any help is appreciated

It’s not much help but i’ve had similar sorts of problems with my G04 Datasafe and my Lite-on 165H DVD-ROM. Also leading on from this compatibility issues with a Pioneer DV-150 standalone player and a Yamada standalone.
Basically i could find no real pattern between software and playback and also using Nero CD-DVD speed to scan the discs.
Generally though i had the least problems using Sonic RecordNow! Deluxe 6.5.
This is why i am on the hunt for a reliable media - it’s wasting a lot of my time scanning discs and checking them all the time and getting semi-coasters that will play in some drives but not the others.
When you factor all this in it’s worth paying the extra to get something you can trust and not have to scan every time you do a disc. Still waiting to see what the best type of media i can get in the UK is…

After some more testing I have narrowed it down to the R04 DVDs. I must say I did not expect this result but looks like I have some of the “cheaper” batch mentioned in a different thread.

I can burn these on my sony, they post as 4X but really burn at between 2x - 3X (i.e. from like 22 mins to 30 min on a full
DVD).

The ones I burn with the sony are readable on all my drives. Dam Ritek, I did not have this problem with the first 25 pack out of my 100, the second pack was about 50/50 success. Not to mention the time spent figuring it out.

I will be sending my already ordered batch of 200 Riteks back when it comes, after paying the restocking fee I will never purchase Ritek/Ridata again.

I would avoid using any Ritek discs with the 2500A.
There are many other low price discs that burn excellently on the 2500A, including all types of CMC.
