I have a Dell XPS M1210 I purchased in November 2006. Since about a month ago, the drive can no longer read or write CDs; it just makes a click, spins for about 2 seconds, stops, and repeats about 15 times. However, DVDs still read and write just fine.
I am currently running Vista which I installed in February 2007. I've hit the message boards (including this one - assumed a dead laser) and have tried these things:
Remove all burning software (except Windows Media 11) - all I had was iTunes, that I know of
Removed all Upper and Lower filters from the registry
Uninstalled and reinstalled the driver, it was already the newest version
Flashed the firmware (i'm at 103c, also tried 103d).
Checked to make sure the disks were good (some were brand new)
Checked for a dirty lense or loose cables
The things I haven't tried are:
- Reinstall XP
- Reinstall Vista
- Try a restore point
- Try a different drive and/or try the drive in another laptop
I have to imagine it's either a bad laser or a Vista compatibility problem. However, its odd it stopped working a year after installing Vista.
Any ideas? I've exhausted all the documented fixes and I have a hard time believing the laser is dead already. Is it possible to swap drives with my DELL insprion 8200 to test?
Thanks in advance.
