NEC ND-6500A Power Calibration Error

I use Dell Ispiron 9200 with NEC ND-6500A. I use Ridata media to burn DVDs without problems until recently it keeps giving me the “Power Calibration Error”. I have burned over 300 Ridata media wothout a problem. Anyone can help me? I have Nero 6.6.1.4, and the firmware for the burner is the latest from NEC website. I did try using verbatim but same problem. My burner is getting old and it is time for change?

You can change another brand like Taiyo Yuden or Mitsubishi and try the lower speed. “Power calibration error” usually means the optical len’s condition is going bad…

Sense Key: 0x03 (KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR)

Try with recommended media like TY and verbatim.

I’ve already tried Verbatim without luck, probably not the disc

What media precisely?

I used Verbatim, Sony media without luck. (I think they are both high quality discs) The Ridata is OK, gives me problem once a while. After burning the first DVD, I have to restart the machine if I want to burn a second one. The total DVDs/CDs I have burned with the NEC is about 1000.

The thing I cannot figure out is why after successful burning the first DVD, it gives me power caliber error unless I restart the machine, the everything is fine again?

I wouldn’t count on Ridata and some Sony media, but the Verbatims should always work (if they are genuine).

But this looks weird:

15:59:09 #20 SPTI -1066 File SCSIPassThrough.cpp, Line 289
E: CdRom5: SCSIStatus(x02) WinError(0) NeroError(-1066)
Sense Key: 0x05 (KEY_ILLEGAL_REQUEST)

I bought the Vbatim at BestBuy so it must be genuine.
I don’t understand the log. why u say it is weird, chef?

Just that error - looks like an communication/driver error.

hmmm, if u mean the driver for the NEC, i did not install nay special driver, just the one comes with the XP.

So what could I do to solve the problem? thanks

I didn’t mean exactly that standard IDE driver form the OS, but other drivers coming with burning apps etc.

An example is:

Existing drivers:
File ‘Drivers\PXHELP20.SYS’: Ver=2.03.28a, size=20640 bytes, created 10/26/2005 15:12:48 (Prassi/Veritas driver for win 2K)

I guess just using my external SONY DVD-RW then.
It is just too much to find and fix the problem, and I don’t have the extra $$$ for a new drive.

But thank you for your help, chef.

Have a look out for an updated firmware.
Don’t flash with another firmware besides 2.xx!!

Hmm 2.24bt/4.24bt is stable enough I think.
And if you have tried various brand which is good enough and also received the same error messages, I can confirm that it’s your drive condition’s going worse.

I think I have to accept the fact my drive is dying.

I am using the DELL OEM driver, have flashed with several but ended with the same result.

I just gonna wait for a good deal, at least my external burner is solid.

Just clean the lince and it works, i did have same problem with my NEC ND-6500A with every disc and after cleaning lince it worked like a charm.
