Ignoring price, any thoughts on which of these is best

  • Mostly general purpose
  • will be using mostly +RW & +R
  • Some +RAM for backup
  • some CD ripping/copying
  • want it to be quiet-ish watching DVDs
  • want something that can handle a wide variety of media
  • expect decent support/fw updates as required
  • be nice to know it’s good at copying protected disks & media scanning

I’ve had a NEC DVD writer, and Liteon CDRW before. The NEC caused me some issues, but at the time DVD writing was new (it was a 1000A), wheras CDRW was known.

I note the liteon can only do DVD+R DL at 4x, whereas the NEC can do 8x, what else have I missed?

Thanks

I think the liteon is looking better

(Also posted to liteon group… need to get both communities opinions!)

That is called crossposting and it is not allowed.

For a neutral ground it would have been better to start your thread in the Optical Drives forum, which is the parent of both the NEC and LiteOn forums.

From your choices I would personally choose the LiteOn SHM-165P6S.
I have just bought this drive in form of the re-badged Sony DW-G120A.

Thanks, and apologies, I should have thought of the parent forum…

the liteon does +r dl @8x (-r dl @4x), and it looks nicer. the liteon is good in copying protected stuff, and it supports many scanning features with the latest test firmware and the dvdscan tool. i only made some test burns with a nec 1300a and the 2510a, and they were good drives, at least for the time they got released. i would buy the liteon as i have more experience with liteys.
