NEC ND-3500ag in ADSTECH external bay won't burn dual layer DVDs

Hello All,

I have the NEC ND-3500ag, firmware v2.16, in an ADS Technologies DLX 185+ External Bay using Firewire. In another identical ADSTECH ext. enclosure in the same firewire chain, I have a hard drive on which sits an 8 gig DVD .iso file created with DVD Decrypter.

Usually I will just break these DVD-9 ISOs up into 2 DVD-5s, but I got a wild hair across my ass and decided that I’d like my dual layer burner to actually burn me a dual layer disk! The media is Ridata DVD+R DL 2.4x from Newegg.com. The error message from Nero 7 says “Could not perform start of Disc-at-once”

I’ve done lots of searching here and elsewhere. Some folks say it’s because the burner is in an external bay. Some say that it needs to have the firmware updated, but still others point out that the NEC site says the firmware update is not to be applied to drives that are in external bays. I am using this set-up in a Dell Inspiron Notebook capacity, so mounting it internally or IDE-wise is not an option. I should also mention that I took the drive out of the firewire daisy-chain and hooked it up to the USB2 port, leaving the external hard drive on FireWire, and that made no difference.

Any assistance that anyone can offer is greatly appreciated. I’ll post the log file:

Welcome to CDFreaks

 Yeah, NEC tells you a lot…
Connect the drive to your USB2 port and use Liggy’s BinFlash.

Your RiTEK DL media is not supported in 2.16 firmware. You’ll have to upgrade to 2.1A for proper media support.
(I assume your media bears RITEK D01 MID)

Remember also, “on the fly” burning (in this case, both devices on firewire) doesn’t work on all setups.
Better to first copy your data to lappy’s HDD and then burn.

Thanks P2 - I’ll try that. - Mick
