This is my first post so apologies if this is an old question.
I bought a Dell Dimension 8250 packaged with a SAMSUNG DVD ROM SD616T and also an NEC DVD+RW ND-1100A. The computer came bundled with Roxio Easy CD Creator V.5 and I subsequently purchased Easy CD & DVD Creator V.6 Platinum Edition as I wanted a Direct DVD recording facility (Drag and drop files onto DVD). I never tried the DVD writer with Roxio V.5 but have had enormous problems ever since I started writing to DVDs using the NEC DVD and Roxio V.6. Not sure if it is the player or the software. I have checked that the NEC DVD+RW ND-1100A Driver is up to date and also downloaded the latest patches for the Roxio software, but some problems remain. Reading and writing to CDs seems OK.
Inserting a blank DVD into the drive - the player often refuses to recognise it. Even if I insert a DVD I recorded earlier into the NEC drive it often refuses to recognise it, whilst the Samsung drive has no problem in reecognising it.
I have had a lot of problems with the Direct DVD writing method too. The software sometimes hangs during writing causing the entire DVD to go corrupt...I can't even reformat it. Because I am using the DVD for periodic back-ups and archiving, I simply dare not delete the files from my HD as I know that there is a good chance the entire DVD will go corrupt before it is full.
Inserting a DVD which was corrupted by (2) above into the drive caused the computer to hang badly - even CTRL+ALT+DEL wouldn't work and I couldn't remove the DVD from the drive (had to resort to manual eject).
The problems above are intermittent. Roxio sent me a procedure for deleting and recreating the upper and lower filters in the registry which fixed problem 3, but the other problems still remain.
For example, I burnt a couple of DVDs yesterday using Easy CD & DVD Classic Creator (not Drag to Disc) which were successful. I booted up this morning and the NEC drive won't recognise them at all whilst the SAMSUNG DVD ROM drive sees them no problem. The NEC drive also won't recognise a blank DVD this morning either. I am using TDK DVD+RW 4.7G media, single-sided.
My support period with Roxio has now expired and Dell won't want to know unless I have a permanent fault on the NEC drive. Are there any self-help diagnostics I can perform ?. I have lost about 5 DVD+RW discs already and I urgently need to start arhiving some stuff reliably.
Thanks in advance for your ideas and suggestions.
