NEC 7173A bitsetting not working

I flashed my NEC 7173A drive with Dee’s AD-7173A 1-O3 Modified Firmware and it worked fine, and when I check the permanent booktype settings, everything is set to DVD+ROM, but when I burn a dvd+R, it does not set it to +ROM.

Any ideas? Thanks

Can you use CD-Speed, insert a burned DVD+R, click on the “disc info” tab and post a screenshot?

here you go, dee…

Checked this with my own drive and it’s working fine.

checked what?

What do you suggest I do then?

Checked bitsetting and it’s working on my drive

It’s a while since this firmware was released and very few reported problems with the bitsetting. I would suggest that you download the firmware from our site again and reflash your drive (link in my SIG).

Set the booktype again in CD-Speed, making sure you tick the “Set default” option before you click on “SET”.
Also, you must make sure no media is in the drive when you make this setting.

I am going to try to re-flash your 1.O3 modified firmware on my drive, then change the booktype settings, and see if that fixes it.

i apologize if this is a really stupid/n00b question, but what is the difference between the Orig and RPC1 column. I installed the firmware from 1o3_orig.zip.

ok, I re-flashed my drive and re-set the booktype settings and burned a dvd and it’s still not setting them to DVD-ROM

I double checked the firmware and decided to burn the media as you have shown in your screenshot.
The firmware is fine.
If you haven’t done so already. Maybe you could write a test disc with CD-Speed and check the result.

Alright, I’m going to try a test disc, then if that doesn’t work, I’m going to try to flash my drive with Liggy’s 7173A firmware

Hey dee, ok here’s the deal: I tried re-flashing once more with your firmware and creating a test disc, that didn’t work (still set the booktype to DVD+R – or rather didn’t change the booktype).

THEN I flashed my drive with liggy’s 7173A firmware, and first time around, it worked! It set the booktype properly!

Thanks for the help! Still don’t know why it’s happening, but I’m ok with using liggy’s

ok I have another problem :frowning:

I flashed my drive with liggy’s firmware. This SEEMED to have fixed the problem. It was now showing my burned disc’s Disc type as DVD+R and book type as DVD-ROM.

The problem came when I put a blank disc in and it read the book-type as DVD-ROM. This is a little strange since the booktype should be DVD+R on a blank. So I started testing with some dvd’s that I knew were not DVD-ROM and it displayed their booktype as DVD-ROM. So everything I put in the drive was showing as DVD-ROM.

I’ve also tried putting a burned disc that was supposed to be DVD-ROM into my other DVD drive and Nero CD Speed listed the dvd’s info, but did not even have a line for Booktype, it just showed Disc Type, then Write Speeds, etc etc, no booktype at all.

Is there another utility to read the booktype of a dvd aside from Nero CD-DVD Speed?

UPDATE:
I just checked DVD Decrypter’s booktype reader and it says that one of my burned discs, that should be a DVD-ROM is a DVD+R. and for current setting it says “Unknown”

Choose Booktype in Options with Nero CD-DVD Speed and then open the Benchmark Tab.

ok, I did what you said and in my nec drive, if I put a burned dvd that should be dvd-rom, it displays “dvd-rom” and if I put a blank dvd in, it displays “blank DVD”. BUT if i put those same disc’s in my other dvd drive, the burned DVD displays “DVD+R” and the blank displays “Blank DVD”

Just to eliminate something, do you have Alcohol 120% or Daemon Tools installed?

They have settings (which can be changed) that show writable media as DVD-ROM.

Although it’s probably not the case, as it only seems to be happening after the firmware flashing.

i have daemon tools installed.

OK. In Daemon Tools, uncheck “Safedisc Emulation” and see if that helps.

it wasn’t checked.
