NEC 6650A and Infiniti Samurai media poor speeds

I have always used the infiniti samurai discs rated at 16 speed with my nec 6650a burner which is in a dell laptop. The latest batch which are the red top not that that matters, only show as 1 speed in roxio. i was using liggys 1.63 firmware which posed no problems before (samsung discs showing at max 8 speed ok) so i tried flashing to the latest fast version of the dell firmware. now when i put the disc in it does not show any speed at all and roxio asks you to select the speed yet no options in the drop down box. The samsung discs still show ok. The drive is identified correctly. i used nero disc tool and this is the info:

is thsi media a new dye not reognised by the burner? never had problems with these discs in the past in fact they were nearly always the best discs i found

anyhelp would be appreciated

What? Infiniti are now using UME02? :Z
I’m truly disappointed by them. They used to use high quality MCC and CMC. :frowning:

It is most likely the media. UME02 is not necessarily bad, but it is not well supported by most firmwares. You may wish to feed these discs to a drive with learning mode (Plextor, LiteOn, BenQ).

i agree they used to be the best most stable disc i have found now its a cheap dye, shame

The dye is not cheap. IIRC, Umedisc uses Mitsubishi azo dye, similar to the dye used in Verbatim, MCC and CMC discs.

You were most likely talking about the disc type, which is the dye + the reflectivity + the polycarbonate + other stuff involved in manufacturing…

yeah somewhat lost, but hey always liking a challenge so decided to change the media code with one that has a 8speed strategy, drive flashed ok and disc now shows at 8 speed, just timing it to see if its all ok or wether i need to go back to the drawing board. i do love a challenge

ok just done a test disc and burnt at a very respectable 13/ 14 minutes give or take, which has been faster than most other brands i have tried on here

Nice to hear that it worked
Is the quality ok as well?
(If not, keep trying with other azo-dye types like MCC 03RG20, MCC 02RG20, CMC MAG. AE1… :))
