Nec 6500 DVD burn issues

#1

I purchased a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo A7640 notebook 18 months ago. Up until recently, i only had need to burn cd’s. This was reasonably successful using both Nero and the standard Windows software. I’ve now found the need to burn some DVD’s but have so far found that not one has worked. Nero tells me that the “Disc at once” function has failed. Since trying to burn DVD’s i now encounter problems with burning CD’s. They generally all fail. Having read various forums and checked out other peoples advice and tried to implement their suggestions, i now sit here with large clumps of hair in both hands hoping that someone may be able to help me. i’m ten minutes away from putting some wheels on this things and trying out some street luge it’s about all its good for!! i’m not a complete novice when it comes to these things. I’ve tried various things already without success. It becomes apparent that this drive is quite problematic for a lot of people. I’ve tried various different types of disc (cd & dvd), even ones that are recommended by other people who have had similar issues. I’ve pasted the last burn log from nero below for a dvd burn. Perhaps someone would be kind enough to cast an eye over it and let me know if there is a fix. I meant to mention that the drive does play pre recorded dvds and data cd’s so i think we can rule out a faulty drive. Thanks in advance
Alan

Further to my previous post, i decided on flashing my drive using binflash from liggy and dee’s website and then updated the firmware for this drive to version 2.24. Previous version was 2.4. I used nero to burn a tdk dvd-r 16x.
Initial impressions were good as the drive whirred up and started to make burning noises. This is a vast improvement from where i was before and i was starting to think the drive was completely knackered  Nero was showing me that it was actually doing something. The buffers had kicked in and progress was happening. It got to the last stage of performing a short lead out when burning failed (“could not perform disc at once”). I decided to test the disc… Low and behold, the disc actually works despite Nero telling me that it had failed. I therefore wonder, could there be a fault with the nero software. Before i flashed the drive, i had no success whatsoever so whilst i am getting somewhere with it, does anyone know of this failed burn issue and a fix for it? Remember of course, that the disc does actually work. I’ve got other media types which i will promptly try and report back. Suffice to say, that without the knowledge posted on this forum i would still be up that creek without the paddle. So a big thanks for those of you that make the effort

#3

The problem before you flashed with burner was that the burners firmware seemed not to recognise the media, hence the 2.4x burn speed - unless you selected that.

What speed do you select to burn at now?

Posting the log from a “failed” burn with the new firmware would be useful.

#4

Hi Tim,
Well the speed for the DVD that worked despite what Nero said was burnt at 8x. Further tests have all failed and those discs have in fact not worked. The log below is from the new firmware. Looking at the failed discs, it’s apparent that there are burn marks on the disc. I’ve tested about 5 more discs and they’ve all done the same… I’m a bit baffled really, perhaps its Nero, maybe an upgrade may help or alternative software is there is a better recommendation? it’s not so much the cost of discs but the time it takes to end up with a load of bad discs!! I did not select 2.4x on the previous firmware, Nero defaulted to that speed

That was a fairly quick failure, whether it happened because some other app had access to the drive - note the exclusive lock failed - or perhaps a media problem I really don’t know.

This is out of my sphere of experience I’m afraid.

You could perhaps try another app like CDBurnerXP Pro or ImgBurn to see if they have more success.

BTW I should have suggested you remove the Nero serial # at the top of the log.
