Nec 3550a dvd -r dl?

I see on the various online stores like newegg etc, that the NEC 3550A can burn dvd -r DL at 6x speed max. I purchased some RiDATA double layer -R’s 4X speed media but whenever I try to burn an image I get an error. In DVD decrypter I get incompatible format errors. In Roxio I get an error the target media is incompatible or is in the wrong state for the operation or the recording.

In Nero I get Illegal Disc/ could not perform start of disc-at-once/burn process failed at 2.4x(3,234 KB/s) //

I have tried to record a regular cdr and it works fine. I have not tried yet to record a regular single layer dvd but I think that’ll be my next test. I am thinking the problem is something easy and obvious and I just can’t see it.

Hope you can help

Update. I did a drive info under dvd decrypter and got this… evidentily it can not read nor write dl -r? wtf??

ImgBurn is the updated burn engine for DVDD, same author, don’t expect DVDD
to work right with new hardware.

Downloaded imgburn and installed it. Attempted to burn. Had same issue. Started looking at ASPI and decided to try out Nero’s from their website. Downloaded the dll, changed the i/o aspi under the setttings on imgburn and tried the whole process again. Still failed. Here is my Imageburn log.

Edit: here is a screencap of the device capabilities under ImageBurn

If you do some searching on the forums here, you will see that a lot of people have problems burning DL, unless they use Verbatim DL media. The other media’s seem to be very problematic…

+R DL other than verbatim problematic
-R DL next to impossible

-R DL from Verbatim (4x or 8x rated) is a good choice for data, in most cases not for video content (DVD VIDEO disc).
+R DL by Verbatim (2.4x and 8x rated) is the better choice for DVD VIDEO content, because it can or in most cases will be bitset to DVD-ROM for best compatibility.

It just makes me angry that I buy a drive which its decription clearly states that I can burn -R DL and yet I can not. :frowning: I mean, I have always heard that the best backwards compatible dvd format is -R so if I want to make a back up of a DVD that I own and be able to play it in any dvd player naturally I’d want to burn to -R.

I put the spool up on ebay and I ordered a 10 pack of Verbatim +R DL and I’ll just set it to dvd-rom so for best compatiblity and move on with my life.

Thanks everyone.

-R is not -R DL.
Kinda the same that you cannot say CD is DVD…
