NEC 3500A Problems w/ Buffer - Not Burning

vbimport

#1

Hi guys. Thanks for taking the time to read this post.

I’m having problems w/ my 3500 and I was hoping some of you could help me. I used to burn dvd’s just fine until about last week…i think I went through about 30 discs (8x) w/o any problems…then last week I started having problems. My buffer has always been fluctuating, but it started getting really bad recently… I just need help finding the root of this problem.

The buffer starts off at say 98% or so…then starts jumpin up and down… In the Nero burn screen, the higher of the 2 status bars (I forget what its called) starts like at full, then starts dropping lower and lower…when it “runs out” the drive buffer goes to like 5% and freezes for a while…then the top status bar starts “refueling” itself…when it gets full again, the drive buffer starts moving again, but fluctuating none the less… then it repeats… finally, the buffer indicator goes away, and it says Burn Failed.

I haven’t made any big changes to my comp recently.
Here is the sys:
2.8 Ghz p4, 1 gig ram, 80 gig hd, 64 mb video card, tv tuner card, thats pretty much it… not a fancy computer…

the power supply sux…came w/ the aspire case…it says its a 350w. i got a new ide cable today…the new round ones… my burner used to have that 40 conducter one…

i’ve been tryin to fix this for the past 2 days… i’ve wasted like 20 dvd-r’s… i’m using DMA btw. i flashed the firmware too. nothin is working… i appreciate the help

#2

that’s strange, it’s almost as if your underrun protection is just failing all together… At full burn speed sometimes my drives buffer fluctuates but I have never seen the ram buffer (the top bar) go down during burning.

#3

Try defragging your HD

#4

yes it sure is weird. i’ve tried a lot of things today… defragged (twice)…burned at slower speeds…different types of media…3 different burning progs…still no success… :frowning:

#5

i know that the buffer fluctuating is normal for the 3500…but w/e my drive is doing is not supposed to be happening…

#6

i’m in the process of updating to nero 6.6 from 6.3… doubt this will change it, but do u guys think i should try a dvd-r on it neway?

#7

they should of really put 8mb of buffer on them… I dont think this is your problem though, your problem appears to be a slow down before the data gets to the drive.

#8

Something robbing your CPU usage? Installed anything that might contain spyware?

#9

hmmm…doubt it but i’ll run adaware and spydoctor. thanks.

#10

hmmmm u might be right about the spyware thing… hope u are… i’ll try burning after spyware doctor finishes up and tell u what happens.

#11

:iagree:
Not only spyware… M$crosoft is nowdays our biggest system resource thief with all crap we get, not knowing about it, by automatic “security” updates.
Installed SP2 some months ago. Couldn´t get a decent burn even at 12x with TY T02… :a

@keenster, disable all virus checking software (including M$ if installed) when burning.

#12

naw its not the spyware or MS… i’m only using less than 15% of my resources…usually 3-5%… looks like i’m still having the problem…i’m burning right now. the “used read buffer” starts getting lower and lower and when it runs out the “buffer level” freezes like at 5% or 7%. then the “used read buffer” fills up again and we start all over… all of a sudden the “used read buffer” doesn’t fill up after it runs out and the burn fails… :frowning:

#13

i’m a lil shaky here. is the “used read buffer” supposed to jump or not?

#14

get nero 6.6
i had the same problems w/ my 3500 when i had nero (6.3.1.7) and even sometimes the drive would just stall during a burn

#15

Odd you got good burns B 4 and not now. You said you had buffer problems B 4 but not as bad. Something you’ve installed whether it be a program or hardware since then. Not sure what else to have you try. I’m take it you’ve gone through all the IDE checks, UDMA2 and using MS IDE drivers etc…Maybe pinto2 has something he can add

#16

i’m doin a burn w/ 6.6 right now… its writing at 8x and its 14 minutes into the burn… hasn’t failed yet knock on wood but its going slow. only about 40% of the file burned.

#17

“I’m take it you’ve gone through all the IDE checks, UDMA2 and using MS IDE drivers etc…”

I’ve checked to make sure i’m using UDMA2… but what other IDE checks should i do?

#18

If you are using IDE drivers from INTEL or VIA, try to use the Microsoft drivers.

#19

ok here’s progress i think…at least change. total time more than 30 minutes. at the end, it said Burn Failed - Disc at once failed… i noticed the read buffer stayed more constant than before…a lot more, but it still dropped to 0 a few times and the burner had to wait for it to “juice up”

here’s the log:

I’m no expert in reading the error report so maybe someone will stumble by and help. Sorry i can’t help you more. If i think of something else i will post it.
