NEC 3500A Insists on DVD-ROM

Hi guys. Have been a programmer for some time, but forums are new to me, so please bear with me!

Have just installed a NEC 3500A and have tried copying a previously backed up DVD-R to DVD-R using “copy disc” option in Nero 6. It seems that the drive insists on DVD-ROM format ( extract from Nero error log… )

I have downloaded and installed the latest firmware from the NEC website. I have also downloaded WinBTypeV2, thinking DVD-ROM might be the default shown there, but DVD+R is!

I assumed the booktype would be set by the media type already in the burner for a multi-format drive, though it obviously isn’t - hope someone can help.

The 3500A does not support the DVD-ROM booktype on single layer media with factory firmware. Only the Dual Layer booktype is set to DVD-ROM.

I just last week bought a 3500A after doing a BUNCH of reading on these forums. I flashed my drive with a hacked firmware, and now ALL of my SL/DL media is burned with the DVD-ROM booktype set. This is a good thing, as it makes the disk the most compatible with set-top players. I tested it this weekend. I put an older +R home DVD project in a Toshiba SD-1200 and it said Disk Error. Then I put in another project on a +R disk with the booktype set to DVD-ROM, and it recognized it!

So…you’ll need to do some reading. For reference, after a couple different firmwares, the one that seems to be working the best for me right now is “218btrpc1.bin”.

Good luck!

stikle give us the link for “218btrpc1.bin”. firmware. from where did you get it. also tell me how to flash.

Thanks for your response, but I am pointedly not trying to burn to a DVD-ROM disc here. I am trying to copy a DVD-R to a DVD-R. This is a multi-format writer and I should be able to do this and no reading I have done has explained why I can’t! :frowning:

i think your problem is that nero is trying to burn the disc as a dvd-rom, but dvd-r’s do not support bitsetting, so nero will only allow the insertion of a dvd+r. this may be just a bug in nero? what version of nero are you using? Try disabling the dvd-rom booktype in nero, and retry.

@jimmyplexed
Please at least try and search and do some research on your own, i put 218btrpc1.bin into the search field in the NEC forum, and 2nd thread from the top i found the information you want, it took me 20 seconds. here

@womblenuggets
Welcome to the forum
Bitsetting is not used for DVD-R so it doesn’t matter if its on or off.
Perhaps there is an error in the disc your trying to copy? If its a DVD Video, you could try using DVD Decrypter or DVD Shrink to copy the disc.

this should be in the nero forum since the is not hardware specific

but…
my guess is that you clicked the booktype checkmark in nero and since it is stock firmware it is unable to comply… if you were to upgrade the firmware most likely you would get an error indicating that it could not set because of the disc since -r media cannot be bitset.

Thanks for your answer though although you say it’s not hardware specific, this is only happening since I swapped out my Pioneer A06 for this NEC 3500A.

I’ve done nothing in Nero to indicate DVD-ROM. I’ve always used Nero Express, which doesn’t give any options to set DVD-ROM if I wanted to. The new drive is causing this.

There are many ill researched and niave questions on these forums and its frustrating that the assumption is that you are another idiot.
