NEC-3500 with 'ANV' branded Ritek G05 8x DVD-R

Hi everyone,

I’m completely new to DVD burning (and this forum), got myself the NEC-3500a and a 25pk of ANV branded, RitekG05 DVD-R’s from Scan.co.uk and done my first burn (data) with the stock firmware (2.16) burned at 8x. Everything went smoothly, I’ve attached the pic of the scans so others can see.

Is this a good burn? Please can someone explain the Kprobe results, cheers.

Now then, I’ve got a few questions:

  1. Im going to be burning DVD-Video, can someone point me to a few tutorials of how to do this onto 1 -R or +R disc, which programs give the best results?

  2. Because of #1, I’ll probably be looking to update the firmware to Herrie’s 2.17 so that in the future when I buy some +R discs I can set the book type to DVD-ROM. How exactly do I obtain this firmware, update it (Ive seen a couple posts giving 2-3 different methods of flashing it, which is the most reliable and easiest) and make use of the features - Which programs allow changing the bitsetting and how is this achieved?

  3. If I’m burning video to DVD-R media, is Herrie’s 2.17 firmware really worth it? I say this because you can’t change the book type for -R’s (correct?) so would such a firmware just unlock the drive for faster dvd-ripping and recording?

  4. When I installed the NEC-3500 drive, 2 new drives appeared in Device Manager:
    #1 _NEC DVD_RW ND-3500AG
    #2 AXV CD/DVD-ROM/SCSI CdRom Device

What is #2 and why is it there (I may have installed Nero 6 and Alcohol120% at the same time, so is it something from these programs)

  1. For DVD Movie playback, which is more compatible -> DVD-R or DVD+R (bitset to DVD-ROM) Or are there other more favourable factors for using the +R media?

Sorry for so many questions, I’ve been trying to digest all the information in this forum for weeks, and the views here persuaded me to get the NEC-3500a over anything else  so if anyone can help me that would be great.

Cheers,

nige

Hi

I have the same drive and media as you and have pretty much the same questions, although I am interested in any firmware upgrades that will enable me to use the Double Layer writing capacities of the NEC3500 as most DL media at present isn’t recognised by my NEC3500.

One question I can answer for you is your second drive “AXV CD/DVD-ROM/SCSI CdRom Device” is part of Alcohol120% it is a virtual drive and you can use it to mount CD or DVD image files allowing you to run them without burning them.

Good luck with your journey into DVD writing.
