NEC-2510A DVD writing issue

#1

Hi everyone,

I’m having a serious problem with writing DVD’s and I have no clue what causes it.

What exactly goes wrong? Well, first of all I have to say that I can write/erase/read CD-R and CD-RW at any speed without any problem. I can also read DVD’s.

Actually I have only used the DVD-burning option once, and it worked. Today, I wanted to burn an image on DVD and after a few seconds, the process just freezes.

The weird part is that my computer isn’t freezing at all, it’s just the writing. In the beginning you can see the led flashing and my CPU working, the used read buffer is at 100%. Then it suddenly starts to go down, to 0%, at which moment the led stops flashing and my CPU usage goes down to 0% as well. Immediately after, the used buffer rises again to 100% but it stopped the burning process… or so it seems. The counter continues, but the procent bar stays at 3%

I’ve tried to wait for awhile but nothing happens, untill I hit Cancel. Then suddenly the activities start again, the led flashes again and my CPU usage goes to 100%.

Then, I tried to erase the DVD. After about 10 seconds it ejects the DVD, while the counter continues for another 5 seconds and then the window disappears. There’s no way the cleaning process can be finished already, it’s supposed to take at least 2 minutes.

My hard disk is kinda full so I thought that might’ve caused the problem, I deleted some stuff and defragmentated. That didn’t do the trick. DMA is enabled. The media I’m using is of high quality and should work properly. I tried EMTEC and EXEL, both didn’t work.

I’m at a loss.

Here’s the log file, which doesn’t show any error message at all:

Well I see it now. But I do have all of my IDE-channels set to “DMA, if possible”… do I have to enable it somewhere else too? BIOS?

The problem is that my motherboard is a piece of shit and I am unable to find support for it, haven’t found updates for my BIOS anywhere. So it’s kinda “pre-historical”.

Edit: okay, that did the trick

Apparently they were set to “disabled” in my BIOS althought I’m quite sure they were enabled before. Anyway, everything works properly again
