NEC 1300A Herrie v108v2 or NEC 1.0B Firmware?

I've been having quite a hard time with this "cheap" media (which actually reads very well BUT my Nec 1300A does not see the media as 4X which it is supposed to be.) It's under the brand, "Hypermedia." The odd thing is I had a previous batch which did all burn at 4x and a batch before that which were also seen at 2x. Now, I know what you're thinking, just switch to better media right? Okay, I will.. however my question is this:

If I were to switch from the “official” 1.0B Firmware to Herrie 108v2 hacked firmware could I burn this media at 4x? (I still have 30 dvds left) Additionally, would I be losing any abilities by switching to Herrie’s firmware instead of the official?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated,

KHypermedia rebrands MANY different types of discs.
That is why your 1st batch could burn at 4X and your current batch only burns at 2X.
You have totally different media.
Please post the MID code of your current discs.
See the FAQ if you don’t know how.

khyper 2x -r for me were tdk G02 and the 4x are usually cmc af1. on my 2500a they will burn badly @8x but fine at 6x

I checked out the media with both DVDIdentifier and DVDInfo and had the following results:

It would appear it can not identify the manufacturer of this cd? What I find odd is that media is identified as being 4x capable but the drive will not burn it at 4x or present it as an option. Is there a way to force this?

Thanks again,

try dvdinfopro and see if it can find the media code. alternately copy the MEDIA CODE BLOCK and paste it in here. that will help us see if it can be identified.

Well I went out and got some Maxell dvd-rs and they’re working great at 4x. So much for cheap media. Thanks All for your help! No more generic media for me!
Ends up my friends LG could not burn it at 2x either. No more Hypermedia.
