NEC 1300A 1.05 - not sure which firmware I need

I’m long overdue for a firmware update. I just don’t know if I get the 1.05 or the 1.07. Do I match the version or get the latest version? All the info I’ve read isn’t clear on this. 1.07 is the latest right?

I don’t intend to install any hacked firmware (I don’t need RPC1) just the factory suported one. I just want to burn disks again.

I seems only TDK dvd-R work now and I can’t buy them around here anymore. Did they tank?

The last official firmware for the 1300a was the 1.08, which you can find on this page: http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/page/en/NEC-ND-1300A/

This is a very old drive now, and most modern disks are not going to be compatible with it. I have one in a backup machine, and the only disks I would use in it now are Taiyo Yuden 8x +R, though Verbatim 8x might also work. I know for certain that the TY 8x +R works well in this drive using the 1.08 firmware.

You can buy TY 8x media online if you are in the US. Rima.com and supermediastore.com both carry it, but only in 100ct cakeboxes.

You can buy a new drive for about $20, sometimes including shipping, from Newegg.com or Zipzoomfly or mwave.com, and I would strongly advise getting a newer one. This 7200 series NEC/Optiarc drive at mwave gets good press around here: http://www.mwave.com/mwave/viewspec.hmx?scriteria=AA73210

There was also a ver 1.OC that was the last one I had flashed on that writer.

It just got more confusing for me. I found the firmware update at the makers website: http://www.sony-optiarc.eu/en/support-service/downloads/rm_dvd-writer-nd-series.html and downloaded it but I read the file that came with it and it said OEM versions are not supported with that update. My PC is an eMachine, as far as I know all OEM. So… I dunno.

To answer Kerry56; I’m in Canada, and I guess a new drive is the best bet. (Any suggestions?) Before I do though I’d like to try an update, if I can figure out which one.

I still own one of these w with 1.0c firmware & it burns like a champ still. I use herries 1.0c it has a burn strat for the new disks.

Thanks everybody. I used herries 1.0c and it burns cds (even memorex!) but not my dvds (Imitation brand). I’ll try to find some other brand, one has to work.

Well it [I]was[/I] working. Now I started up today and I get the _NEC_ERROR! ND-1300A problem.

Any suggestions?
