Well for about a week straight I've been hard out researching the different 16x dvd+/-r dl drives available. And all I've got to show for it is a headache.
So I thought maybe you guys could shed some light on things for me as I'm under a time limit (GF has agreed to buy me one for xmas :iagree: ).
Firstly some info...
- I'm currently running SuSE Pro 9.1 and use K3b for my (cd) burning needs. How do the different drives available perform (flashing, burning, software/hacks available if any, etc).
- Also the uses for the drive will be extremely varied, from backing up those Linux dvd's , to the gf making a home movie of kids to send to grandparents (so will need the end result to work with majority of standalones).
Next the questions. Here in New Zealand the range of choices is quite high and they are all within ~$NZ40 of each other.
Pioneer DVR-108 16X DVD +/-R/RW 4x Dual Layer
LG GSA-4160 Dual Layer 16xDVD
BENQ DW1620 16X DVD-RW Dual Layer
LiteOn LDW-1633S Dual-Layer +R/RW R/RW 16X
Gigabyte GO-W1608A Dual Layer 16R/16W/4RW DVD±RW/±R
NEC ND-3500 DVD Dual-Layer 16X DVD+R 4X DVD+RW
also others from Asustek, Microstar, Sony, BTC, etc, etc.
Now the pioneer seem to fall down when it comes to media compatability? Right. I've heard from a friend good things of the LiteOn, and had fantastic experiences with their 40125s (which btw has been running since I got it - 3 years - as a 48125w :D), but all the reviews I've read don't like the LiteOn at all. Haven't been able to find out bugger all on the Gigabyte drive, anyone got one? That leaves the LG, BenQ and NEC. Opinions based on knowledge of my requirements welcome please. Let me know if there is other details that would help you guys help me get through this.
Thanks in advance
