This is a slim external drive. Is this unit shipped with a power supply? If not, then this could be the reason for the trouble.
Slim drives require 1500 mA@5V. An USB port is not designed to provide more than the 500 mA@5V by spec. This is a massive overload not all computers can handle (if some dubious Y-cable is provided, this doesn't help much either).
My suggestion: back to vendor and get a "full size" drive, that has its own power supply. My personal favourite at the moment is LG GE20NU10 (or LU10).
