My new BenQ sucks?

Okay, got a BenQ 1640 today, and after a bunch of stress (bad cables came with it, tricky tower enclosure made installing it hard) I finally burned some media. Here’s what happened:

General Information
Drive: BENQ DVD DD DW1640
Firmware: BSHB
Disc: DVD+RW (PHILIPS 041)
Selected speed: 8 X
PI errors
Maximum: 16
Average: 5.60
Total: 63473
PI failures
Maximum: 13
Average: 0.19
Total: 2012
PO failures: 0
Jitter
Maximum: 8.5 %
Average: 6.76 %
Scanning Statistics
Elapsed time: 9:39
Number of samples: 17444
Average scanning interval: 8.08 ECC
Glitches removed: 0

Several things concern me at this point:

  1. I think the PI/F are kinda high. Should I get better media? My box (and every where I look on the web) says that this media should be fine. Have I been lied to?

  2. The disc is 4.7GB, but Nero says it’s 4.3GB. Muh?

I also got an error when I started burning saying that the DVD would be burned in UDF format because a file was too big. I then got a tone of errors in burning. Here’s the log:

Oh, and here’s the benchmark Nero gave me:

Does anyone have any suggestions/advice/words of comfort? (or links to an easy to follow guide to flashing this drive to RPC-1?)

I hope thats not your nero serial number at the top of the log file

Thats actually a pretty good burn. You may want to try updating the firmware to the latest BSMB! duh! :stuck_out_tongue: You shouldn’t jump to conclusions so soon, thats the lowest jitter score I’ve seen in a while. You can also get Qsuite which will allow you to play with the setting in the drive, like wopc and solid burn.

Welcome to the forum.

You are using DVD+RW media which is known to have higher error rates compared to write once media (DVD+R/DVD-R) especially after few burns. As eric93se said, your scan is actually not that bad and the thin PIF spike around 2.6GB is still within limit. I would suggest to run “Transfer Rate” test and if the graph is smooth then you need not to worry at all. Btw, Benq drives scans with 8ECC interval so PIF max of 16 is still good (compare to 1ECC such as LiteOn, PIF max = 4).

  1. The disc is 4.7GB, but Nero says it’s 4.3GB. Muh?
    Yap, 4.38Gb = 4,482Mb = 4,589,850Kb = 4,700,000,000 bytes. (Note: 1 Kb = 1,024 b)

Try other media you own, if they are as good as that one, then I wouldn’t flash the firmware!

Eck! That is my serial I think. Why would Nero put that in a burnlog?! Could a mod please remove it?

Thanks for the input eric93se and zevia. Jut two questions though. Can I flash to a older firmware if a new one doesn’t work and are there any known problems with TDB firmware for the Benq1640 BSHB? (Its the same as mine except RPC-1)

Yes and No.

Well, I was suggesting not to flash the firmware, but if you decided to flash the firmware I would suggest to flash with BSLB or BSMB (RPC1).

Thanks for the help evryone!

Turn on DMA

Sharp eye!

@fr33th34rt, your burst rate shows 13MB/s which is very low. If you place your drive internally, you should be able to get 23-24MB/s for a smooth 16x burning. To check and set your DMA, read this. Also, I believe the last scan is transfer rate and it shows only 10x speed (9.82x to be exact). However, the graph doesn’t look like you’re having DMA problem because it’s smooth. Did you intentionally set the read speed to 10x in Nero CD-DVD Speed Option - Standard Test?
