My NEC 3550A is crashing all the time!

Hi everyone and thank you for providing such a useful forum !

Here comes my question :

I’ve got a NEC-3550A and at the beginning every thing was okay. But now 9 burn process out of 10 fail ! It is really annoying ! I have spoiled a huge amount of DVDs !

I have really no ideas about what is causing this constant failure since I have not installed any new soft or hardware on my computer. Furthermore, when I burn a DVD using DVD Shrink, I never faild a burn job what makes no sens to me !

 • I’m using NERO 7.5.7.0 and Alchol 120% - Fail on both
 • I’m using Windows XP Pro
 • Any DVD ,DVD Shrink : I’m giving you details in case it’s related.

Here is the log file from NERO :

I hope my english was understandable ?

Thank you very much in advance !

Nicolas.

NEC drive 3550A is very good and relaiable drive try to restore your system registry to the date before this happened then reboot and try again see if the problem gone away.

I have the same exact issue on two system. One did a complete reinstall of XP and still the same issue. Burns great with DVD shrink but fails every Nero attempt.

One thing does stand out is I am also running anyDVD as I see your log also list, I wonder if it is an issue with anydvd?

Hello,

i also have the nd-3550a nec dvd writer
i use dvd shrink to rip/shrink the dvd to an iso file, then use dvd decrypter to burn.

good luck.

OK I disabled AnyDVD and burned one without issue. I re enabled it and have one burning now without it failing and is at 90% right now. There must be some issue with AnyDVD. Disable and give it a shot.

Ho man ! What a relief to see that i’m not the only one ! Ok so I’m gonna try to disable AnyDVD and I’ll tell you what ! But what do you exactely mean by disable it ,shall I desinstal it ? Because it’s not running when I burn a DVD so how can I disable more than that ?

Anyway thanks to all for your answrs and suggestions !

if you right click the icon in the tray there is an option to enable, just un-check it.

BTW if you look through your log you will see it was running while you were burning the disk.

Could also be a media issue… The MID visible in the Nero log is a very strange one. Sounds to me like no-name el-cheapo media.

What blanks do you use exactly (brand + model)? Please download DVDIdentifier and post the mediacode of these discs.

Welcome to the forum, MDS68801 and Coubiak

Thank you very much for your welcoming and all this precious pieces of info ! I’ll do what you advised me and keep you posted ! Thank you

Here is the disc Info from DVD Identifier. But the thing is that those DVDs work fine when I’m copying a DVD thanks to DVDShrink, then when it calls NERO to burn the data it all work fine so I’m not sure it comes from the media but I definitely trust your knownledge and you are right to check all the posibilities

Hey ! Here are some updates :

 • I uninstaled AnyDVD completly ,I mean completely (Even in the Register etc…) and it’s still crashing at 13%. This thing is just crazy ! I really don’t want to format my PC cause it’s a RAID with all my software on it and except this DVD problem it’s working perfectly so I’m really looking for a fixing solution instead of an “erasing” one.

Thank you by advance,

Nico

the problem is nero sucks… update to the latest version, or an older version… something other than what you’re using now… or just use a new program, like imgburn!
good luck…

Unfortunaytely I tried it already, newer version, older version, other softwares … something is definitely wrong but I can’t figure out what it is. Anyway thanks for your post

I’m sorry to insist but you guys are my best hope ,does anyone can think about another solution ?

Sorry for some reason I didn’t receive thread updates notifications.

Thanks for the DVDIdentifer report, but you don’t mention the brand of these discs, please do
TTH02 is variable in quality even when TDK-branded, so if you have some E-net TTH02 discs like Datawrite, Datasafe, Tuffdisc or generic (unbranded) discs it’s most probably the media that is the culprit.

You need to try writing with different, reliable discs like Verbatim, Sony, Plextor, Panasonic to rule out a media issue…

RAID? Mmmh… are you using a dedicated add-on IDE card for this? If so, it could be related. Some IDE add-on cards are troublemakers with optical drives.

Sorry ,I’ve been really long to answer. The reason is that I tried a lot of kind of DVDs those last days in order to check if it was a media issue … the answer is no… TDK, VERBATIM, SONY ,expensive one ,cheap one … it stills crash at 13% ,each time … it’s driving me crazy ! I can’t believe there is no solution ! I know there is a tiny hidden files somewhere which has decided to drive me nuts !

I keep looking on the internet for solutions but I have to admit that my hope is pretty crumbling right now …

Anyway thanks for taking time thinking about my problem, I really aprecciate that.

(About the IDE card, I have none. The Raid system is integrated in my motherboard).

Try re-seating the IDE cable at the mobo and at the drive, and/or try another (80-conductors) IDE cable.

But my guess is that the drive itself has a problem. :frowning:

Yes I think so too. I’m gonna get a new one. Thanks for the precious help Francksoy ! You’ve been great ! May I ask you what drive do you use ?

You’re welcome.

May I ask you what drive do you use ?
I guess the question id “what burners do I recommend”…

All these are fine burners IMO:

NEC 7170/73
BENQ 1650
PIONEER 111D
LG-GSA H22N

Recent LiteOn drives (6S series) have a very good reputation on this board, but personally I had only issues with the units I tried so I can’t recommend them. I don’t have first-hand experience with the NEC 7170/73 but two freinds of mine have great results with the 7170.

Thank you for the tips Francksoy, i’ll keep you posted !
