If you can't check it in another box and you have been to your MOBO site and updated all the chip drivers(fixed some problems for some people) as well a the BIOS(updates the way your MOBO sees your hardware and software and deals with it). Then you are left with a reformat and XP full install(worked for some people).
Remove and reinstall your drive, safe boot to remove old hardware in device manager
New drive! You need two! So if your old one starts working/no sweat!
Get the cheapest OEM drive you can find!
3540=reliable/easy to install
1640=best burner but luck of the draw on getting a perfect unit
1693= is making a come back these days
110D=may have install problems/depends on your setup
LG=current model/another good choice

716=very nice but the price is too high
