My DVD Available write speed has gone down

I have recently gone to burn DVD’s and noticed my Available write speed options have gone down (at the last page of NERO Vision 4) from 16X as the highest burn speed (has been for months), now it only lets me burn at a max of 4X. It is not failing to make DVD’s, just odd that it would all of the sudden change the option I see.

I am using exact same disks ( Memorex DVD-R 16X / 4.7 Gig) and same type .AVI files (even tried using old videos I know gave me 16X option).

It doesn’t seem to effect the CD burn max (still 40X).

I have burned a lot of DVD movies lately (like 200 in last 2 months) could it be failing/burning out?

How do I check if it is working properly? The “Device Status” says its working properly.

DVD info:
HL – DT – ST DVDRRW GWA-4166B Properties (came with Compaq Presario)
I have NERO 7 full if anything like DVD/CD speed or Drive speed numbers are needed

From what I gather 4X is the max speed I should burn a DVD movie (from AVI etc) at anyways, but if the burner is dying I want to find out before my warranty expires.

Thanks.

Welcome to CDFreaks, make sure you have the following checked:

  1. Is you drive (burner) is in DMA position?, (check from Device Manager)
  2. Is your Hard drive fragmented?, if yes try to do defrag.
    1. Empty all your Temp files in that directory.
  3. Try to upgrade your drive(burner) firmware

Thanks for the reply,

now the DVD is making blank disks after it says its done (using DirectXtoDVD). I have another thread about that:
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=208638#post1686128

  1. I can’t find the “DMA” position in the Device manager tabs for the DVD/CD drive. (It was working fine earlier today)

  2. I just now defragged my HD (it started with 97 out of 179 Gigs, had almost no red fragmented files.

  3. I ran ccleaner and deleted all temp files in explorer (is there other things I should specifically do? or temp folders I should delete/check?)

  4. I got an HP driver update for the burner, but it needs to be put on a disk to install (or so the website says). I will try and hopefully it updates.

It can read DVD’s and CD’s fine. Is there any simple way to test just the burner (software etc?). I will try to burn somethind DVD using NERO Vision and post result.

and here is the Defrag report:

You might want to check and see if they are in fact the same media. use dvd identifier to read the media code and see what you actually got (and compare it to the older stuff that burned fine).

It must be ConvertXtoDVD that is screwed up because I just burned a DVD using NERO Vision (but it still only gave me 4X burn speed as the highest, when I used one of the exact same disks, give me as high as 16X - like 1 week ago). The NERO burn turned out fine (it was a movie AVI), but nero has trouble with TV shows (audio sync problems I have tried 20 ways to fix and gave up)

I downloaded and ran DVD Identifier:

This is a disk that came out of ConvertX still empty:

Should I still run the Driver update? (my current driver is from 2001, even though computer is around 6 months old)

dvd identifier is showing 4x as your only suported burn speed with this media and that drive. I would try a firmware update.

Hello mate cant really help you but i have the same burner and i posted a thread Thursday about my burning speed. I have the same problem i cant burn dvd over times 4 speed.

This Ritek F1 media is relatively new and many burners need a firmware update to be able to recognise it and offer more than the default 4x burn speed which won’t give good results anyway. Ritek is crap but that’s a different issue.

You must have a firmware update to use this media.

Alternatively dump the media & buy Verbatim.
