WITH GOOGLE nipping at its heels, Microsoft has just released a beta edition of its new MSN Desktop Search application. Like Google's very similar product, Desktop Search builds an index of documents and e-mails on your PC, and then lets you search the index. So you could, for example, instantly locate all documents and Outlook e-mails on your PC that contain the phrase "expense account".
Actually the new Desktop Search is just an enhanced version of the Indexing Service which is already built into Windows, But it is slightly easier to use, and, like Google Desktop Search, can now search Outlook e-mail messages. That latter feature comes courtesy of Lookout software, which Microsoft bought in June this year.
