In other news Daala, when completed, will be patent-fee. The majority of implementations will be likely be Free (as in freedom) Software, as proprietary developers won’t want to compete. In June 2013, Chris Montgomery (founder of Xiph.org) stated that the performance goal for Daala is to be a generation beyond HEVC and VP9. Combine that with Opus audio, and you’ll likely have the ability to produce smaller files (while still retaining reasonable quality) than any proprietary formats.
