MP3's wont play in their correct order!

Hey, i just made an account. Im not sure if this is the right section, but it seemed the most “fit” for the question.

I have a large collection of MP3 files. Now, when i play an album… lets say “An Ocean Between Us”, WinAmp, Windows Media Player, and VLC media player (despite shuffle being turned off) Still play them in the following order (01, 02, 04, 05, 07, 08, 09, 10, 03, 06).

I’ve opened each file’s properties (IDv1 and 2), and compared them. I cannot find a single piece of data that file 03, and 06 are missing. All 10 files have appropriate track numbers, correct titles, correct album art, correct album name and artist name…

This is very bothersome, since i love my music collection. I want it to be able to play in the correct order. (and this is not the only album. Some play completely shuffled, and some play correctly.) There is something im missing here. Please help me?

Are you playing your mp3’s via a play list file? ( IE a M3U file )

:cool::cool:

Nope, no playlist file. Theyre seperate MP3s. And i would really like to keep them that way, rather than make a playlist file. Because once my music collection is perfect, i planned on buying a 120gig MP3 player. And i want all the songs to play in the appropriate order, and display the album art, and all that jazz. You know?

Are these mp3’s on your HDD? I’ve never seen my media players’ care at all about the naming of files. They play in the order in which I’ve arranged them, which can be changed at will. Names, tags are irrelevant. Trying to play mp3’s burned as DATA on a disc in the correct order, though, is a whole other story.

How do you load your mp3’s into the media player?

Are you playing from the HD or Disk?

The reason I ask is depending on which way you do it can have diferent results depending on the setting within the media player.

Besides having the ID tags in order( which has no bearing ) how do you have your tracks labeled?

Give us an example of some songs and how you have them labeled and show the correct order that you want them to play in and the mix up order that they are playing in.

:cool::cool:

Ok. The band name is "A Day To Remember"
The album name is "And Their Name Was Treason"
The files are on the HDD.

this is how theyre arranged in my folder.

  1. Intro
  2. Heartless
  3. Your Way With Words Is Through Silence
  4. A Second Glance
    ~Track 5 through 10~

The way the files play are like this

  1. Intro
  2. Heartless
  3. A Second Glance
    ~Track 5 through 10~
  4. Your Way With Words Is Through Silence (at the end)

For some reason, track 3 plays last.

The track numbers are 01,02,03,04 and so on.

Try using 001, 002, 003 etc, at the beginning of each MP3, numbering them in the order you want.

sigh
nope, that didnt do it either

ive tried …

1
01
001
1/10

If you used this, it’s not what I meant. First MP3 001 etc, second MP3 002 etc, third MP3 003 etc & so on. Etc being the rest of the MP3 title.

1
01
001
1/10

How are you loading them into your media player?

Here is an example of how I have a music folder with the tracks labeled and they are in the correct order as they appear on the album and the order in which I prefer them to play.

01 Avenida Revolution
02 Soap On A Rope
03 Sexy Little Thing
04 Oh Yeah
05 Runnin’ Out
06 Get It Up
07 Down The Drain
08 My Kinda Girl
09 Learning To Fall
10 Turnin’ Left
11 Future Is The Past

Now, Using Video lan.

If I open this player and then select media then open folder and then select the music folder. Video lan will default and play the tracks in alphabetical order.

01 Avenida Revolution
07 Down The Drain
11 Future Is The Past
06 Get It Up
09 Learning To Fall
08 My Kinda Girl
04 Oh Yeah
05 Runnin’ Out
03 Sexy Little Thing
02 Soap On A Rope
10 Turnin’ Left

Not the order I wish them to play.

If I open the player and then drag and drop the tracks. The tracks are played in the correct order.

01 Avenida Revolution
02 Soap On A Rope
03 Sexy Little Thing
04 Oh Yeah
05 Runnin’ Out
06 Get It Up
07 Down The Drain
08 My Kinda Girl
09 Learning To Fall
10 Turnin’ Left
11 Future Is The Past

Do you see where I am going with this?

There has to be a pattern in your files for them to be play the way they are.

:cool::cool:

Well, i tried the 001, 002 in the title. And not even that worked.

But it doesnt play them alphabetically… because

“Casablanca Sucked Anyways” comes After “Heartless”

That is truely weird…

I once had a problem with WMP with it constantly wanting the files in alphabetical order and I instituted a file name scheme like the one above “001 Hells Bells.mp3” because that brute forced WMP to play them in numerical order.

I cannot imagine what is causing your files to play in that order, UNLESS they are being played in order or track length
OR more likely “aquisition date-time”

So if after you ripped the files when you imported them into your audio player they were already in that order for some bizarre reason…

There has to be SOME logic to it because computers are religeous about “logic”

AD

Yes, there must be some logic… But it seems like i’ve edited nearly every piece of data in regards to the songs. Everything except the track length, and date created, and all that. Which are basically un changeable.

Would you like me to send you the album somehow?

How are you loading them in the media player?

:cool::cool:

Well, i just right click the folder and hit “play in winamp” WMP and VLC do the same thing.

A possible brute-force suggestion: there’s a plugin in for WinAmp called ‘Playlist Unpacker’ that can take a WinAmp playlist and pre-pend ‘PL001, PL002, PLXXX’ to a copy of the file. I use it to make MP3 CDs keeping the albums in order, without having to permanently rename the songs (I’m lazy and keep my music in a couple huge folders, with the filename format ‘Title - Artist - Album.MP3’ and use WinAmp’s Library functions to sort them).

I do think it’s needed, as what I describe above it what is actually happening.

This was also tested in the real world scenario.
