Movies are *almost* perfect, just 2 minor annoyances

Because Stormjumper thought it would be a good idea, here is my own thread:

I have a handful of movies (Cars, Beauty and the Beast, Charlotte's Web, The Incredibles) that I've made in xvid+source, and none of them:

1. Properly show the length of the movie in Windows File Explorer.
   
2. Create their thumbnail in Windows File Explorer.
   

OS: Vista Ultimate, SP1

I've only chosen a single audio track, 5.1, and no subpicture.

This has been happening over several versions, including beta 4.1.1.6

Have you tried to edit their properties with ABCAvi Tag Editor? I find that this sometimes sorts this problem out.

No I have not. I’ll try that later this afternoon, but obviously I would prefer for the files to come out right from DVDFab on the first go

I wonder if I’m looking at the file before dvdfab has completely closed it, and that is why the movies were screwed up. I’ll try to test that theory.

And I was sure not to touch the file until DVDFab was completely shut down. I’ll try The Incredibles today/tonight, and see how it comes out.

If it works on those other DVD tittles then the problem is not with DVDFab or it would not work at all,…most likely it is the way the DVD’s was made

Yeah, that doesn’t make sense, at all.

If you follow my thread of me talking to myself, you will see that “Charlotte’s Web” and “Beauty and the Beast” did not work previously, [U]but do now[/U].

That tells me that something has changed, and it’s certainly not the disc.

Oh I have been following the thread, just trying to help .
All I’m saying is it is not the prorgam if it works on some and not the others, the way the disc are made is just a guess because I dont know your system <–could be a factor.
If you like I can just keep my .02 cents to myself

Not sure what else to say/do. If I find any more movies with this issue, or if I find a fix, I’ll post again.

I haven’t used DVDFab much .If by no subpictuer you mean no subtitles.Try leaving in at least the English one & sometimes some of the others.

I left one English one selected with everything else the same for “The Incredibles”… same 2 issues are still there.

This did increase my filesize from 2.20 GB to 2.28 GB though.

I think I just figured it out, it’s when the file that get’s created breaks the 2.0 GB mark, that this starts happening.

1.99 GB, is fine, ANY movie I create over 2.00 GB and this happens.

Any thoughts ?

Anyone know why the metadata/thumbnail is corrupt on my .avi (xvid+audiosource) movies that are larger then 2.00 GB??

I’m thinking maybe I should start a thread with a better title?

I’d really like to get this resolved. I just don’t know if this is a Vista bug, or a DVDFab bug.

Not really much use as it is an inherent problem with AVI files over 2.0Gb and always has been and always will be because of the AVI specs which are now becoming rather outdated.

On another note the files really should not be this big anyway if you use a rate of ~1100 which usually gives good quality.

is something replacing the avi container? My main needs are to re-play these moves on the xbox via file sharing, hence the xvid+audiosource profile I was using.

errr, I’m doing them at 4096, that a bit high?

Yeah, I think 4096 is way too high for DVD->AVI

I’ve tested, tested & tested with a variety of media players/TV combinations for over 4 years and the standards that I have settled on and always use are:-

2 Pass encoding
Maintain original DD5.1 sound (generic.audiocopy profile)
1100 bitrate

Try the different bitrates yourself and see what meets your needs.

NB: This is a very subjective subject.
