[moved] System crashes when copying with DVD Shrink

I’m tring to make a backup of a movie I just bought using shrink 3.2 and nero express. I can’t seem to be able to do backups of movies longer than 90 minutes without my burner and computer crashing. I was able to do it once at 4X with an external fan really close to my CPU to cool it down, so I later tried to do it at 2X because on my stand alone the pictures was pixelised. But even with the fan really close, the computer crashed at about 50% burning. Is there anything I can do? I’m losing patience and making too many coasters…

My computer is a brand new pentium 4, 3.2 GHZ, 2 GB ram, I also have a 120 gig HD at 50%, Nero Express 5.5.10.56 version, my burner is a LiteOn 851S with the latest firmware (DR8GSOP), I’m running windows XP home edition and I’m using Ritek Ridata DVD-R G04 disks. I also do a defrag between each burn.

I’ve been suggested to upgrade to Nero 6 to solve my problem and that it shouldn’t be a an overheating problem. I’m starting to believe that it’s related to my burner because I can play on my computer the burned DVD with good quality all the way to the point where it crashed!

Could it happen because I’m using DVD-R instead of DVD+R?

Or are my theories all wrong?

Thank’s for your help!

Welcome :slight_smile:

For you system to crash, it is unlikely to be the drive. The system workes very hard when it is transcoding. What is it doing at the point of the crash? What is the error message you get when the system crashes or does it freeze or does it do a reboot?

As you don’t seem to be getting a reply in the Liteon Forum, I’m going to move this to the DVD Movie Backup and Copy Software Forum, where somebody may have experience a similar problem.

#3

Were it a instant reboot, a BSOD or a darkblue Screen of Death without any information???

#4

DougR6,when you use Shrink 3.2 make sure it’s set to ISO Image,when you first start Shrink hit open file once it scans then hit back-up and save to a folder on your hard-drive, ( make sure your not doing anything else on your computer while it’s shrinking period)(Shrinking use’s 100% of the processor, so do nothing else but shrink). As far as the Nero your using, I use Nero Ultra 6, but if yours is simuliar close the page with the menu to your left side of the screen the go to the top of the bigger screen, click recorder, click burn image, ( set your speed to 2 or 4 times ) hopefully this will solve your problem, if not start using Nero 6

Hi,

I’d agree the problem is most likely to be Nero if you are not doing anything else on the processor. Upgrade and thing should be fine.

Thank’s for all your answers!

Well, I’ve removed and reinstalled DVD Shrink 3.2 and for some reason my system is not crashing anymore when I do a burn. When it was, everything would just stop, I had to reboot manually, the screen was frozen.

I’ve tried two different media today, ridata G04 DVD-R and TDK-R 2X, with the G04, as soon as I started the burn process I got a write error and at 87% with the TDK.

Could something be wrong with the burner itself?? I’ve been succesfull before at burning DVD, I reallly don’t understand what’s different from before and why it doesn’t work anymore.

Maybe someone knows what this means:

Hi,

I can see that the DVD Rom Drive on your IDE Port with the writer on the same port has been set to be the master. I would seriously consider switching the two so that the writer is the master and also enable the DMA on the DVD Rom Drive as there is an issue with Windows XP pushing all the peripherals on a single IDE port to the lowest possible data rate on that port(that would be PIO rate[DMA is off] of the DVD Rom drive in your case) even though one of them is set to DMA. This is an existing issue in Windows XP(See MIcrosoft Knowledge Base for more Info). This could be the cause of your problem. Then try the burn again. The reason I am suggesting this is b’coz it worked for me. If the DMA does not get enabled due to a bad lens/laser strength (search the forum for more info) then I would seriously consider uninstalling the DVDRom from the same port as the Writer.

Hope this helps.

Thank’s Unicorn23. I have no idea of how I can switch the slave and the master so I’ll probably have to take it to a shop.

What I don’t understad is that only two weeks ago, everything was working fine and suddenly it does’nt work anymore. I tried again this morning and I got the same error message at 83 % burn.

I was looking at my Nero window and I could see the Recorder Buffer Level/State level fluctuating between 94 and 98% and suddenly at 83% burn it dropped at 65% and the burner light started flashing green and then everything just stopped.

What’s happening that makes the buffer level suddenly drops like that?

Hi DougR6,

This is what I meant,

“=== Scsi-Device-Map ===
DiskPeripheral : WDC WD1200JB-00FUA0 atapi Port 0 ID 0 DMA: On
DiskPeripheral : WDC WD2000JD-00GBB0 atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: On
CdRomPeripheral : HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8162B atapi Port 3 ID 0 DMA: Off
CdRomPeripheral : LITE-ON DVDRW LDW-851S atapi Port 3 ID 1 DMA: On
=======================”

Now see my above post and you’ll probably understand what I’m saying. I can understand that you don’t know how to switch the master and slave but I would seriously consider getting it done by someone and I’d also read up the posts on the forum regarding DMA and how to enable it.

Hope this helps.

PS: Had the same issue myself. So most likely COULD be the cause. No harm doing it anyway. Writer is always preferred as the MASTER.
