(moved) Best Value High Speed DVD Media in UK

Having virtually run out of DVD media I had a good look around for good value, but high speed (12X or higher), media for my NEC 3500A.

The sites I searched were:

www.bigpockets.co.uk
www.cd-rmedia.co.uk
www.dvd-and-media.com
www.disccity.co.uk
www.valuemedia.co.uk

However, I found that ALL the best deals seemed to be found at CD-R Media. Here are the items I purchased, alongside their maximum burn speed on an NEC 3500/3520:

16X
Maxell DVD-R 8X (MXL RG03) - 16X - £9.75 for 25 (30p each)
Sony DVD-R 8X (SONY08 D1) - 16X - £10.25 for 25 (41p each)

12X
Verbatim DVD-R 8X (MCC 02RG20) - 12X - £10.25 for 25 (41p each)
Sony DVD+R 8X (SONY D11) - 12X - £10.25 for 25 (41p each)

Incidentally, I also bought a single Verbatim 12X DVD+R - mainly because I didn’t know what media code it would have. It turned out to be MCC003, giving a rather unimpressive 8X burn on an NEC 16X drive.

If anyone else knows of any very good deals like this in the UK, add them to the thread :slight_smile:

Oops! That should be 39p each for the Maxells!

hi i would also add to your list of sites one being:

www.svp.co.uk

they sell pack of ANV DVD-R 8x rated (RitekG05) for £11.99 which can be burned at 12x with good results

also the datasafe DVD-R rated 4x (prodiscs03) can be burned at 12x with nice results also and they are £4.78 for 25pack.

hoep this helps.

That’s a lot of $ for DVDs in the UK. Does that incluces VAT? l could pick up a 25 pack of 8X DVD+R made in Japan Fuji on sale for $10 US. These are Taiyo Yuden discs which will burn at 16X with the stock NEC 2.18 firmware. The ID code is Yuden000 T02.

@PiracyX

Ah yes, sorry! I did include SVP in my research … I have used them a number of times before, and I just forgot to add it in my list :). I didn’t include the Ritek G05 discs as they only burn at 8X with release (2.18) firmware and are more expensive than disks that burn at 16X with release firmware.
As for Prodiscs03, whilst they are cheap they only burn at 4X with default firmware.

@furballi
Prices are higher here than in the US, but unfortunately that is the way with a lot of things. I guess you don’t pay £3.60p ($6.78) for a gallon of fuel :slight_smile:

If anyone has any better deals on DVD media in the UK that burn at 12X or above with release firmware, then please post here!

@PiracyX
What brand are the RITEKG05? I’m using RiDATA and getting a lot of coasters @12x burns.
@mwarner
The best overspeeder I’ve tested is the RICOHJPNR02 @16x branded Philips @8x DVD+R.
See here in the UK. 50 for 17 quid is 0.34 per +R disk that burns @16x… (hope it’s the same MID, you could post a Q to the relevant web)

dvd-r media ID CMC MAG AE1 sold as

datawrite 8x printable
datawrite Titanium 8x
datawrite Yellow 8x
datawrite 8x hub printable

they write perfectly at 12x using Quikee Extreme firmware in your nec 3500
and cost about £6 for a tub of 25. I’ve burnt loads at 12x and no failures at all (yet)

You could always try http://www.theinkdepot.com/default.php?cPath=36

Its my local shop, and the cheapest I’ve seen. :iagree:

I thought £7.50 (Inc Vat) for 25 BenQ discs(SONY08D1) was pretty reasonable.

Works out 30p per disc.
