SINGAPORE, 22nd April 2010 - Mitsubishi Chemical Infonics Pte. Ltd. (MCI) announced today the installation of its own designed state-of-the-art BD-R manufacturing lines, which are BD-R DL 50 GB line and BD-R LTH TYPE 25GB line. MCI has been manufacturing DVD-R DL and BD-R LTH TYPE discs branded Mitsubishi and Verbatim, which Mitsubishi Kagaku Media Co., Ltd. (MKM) and its subsidiaries, Verbatim companies, provide worldwide. MCI and MKM are wholly owned subsidiaries of one of Japan’s largest chemical companies, Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (MCC). MKM/Verbatim group is already a leading company in the worldwide external storage market. Increasing demand for Blu-ray Disc (BD), MCI and MKM decided to invest in Optical Disc Division operation in Singapore. MCI and MKM continues to aggressively invest in the next two years as BD market grows as expected. “MCI invests in new equipments by approximately 40 % of the total sales of MCI’s optical disc division,†said Yoshinobu Ikeda, president of MCI . “With this expansion, the Singapore plant will increase its manpower by 20 % . †MCI, the Mitsubishi Chemical’s manufacture base in Singapore, is of strategic importance to MKM/Verbatim BD business. Right from Research Centre in Japan, the disc media technology is transferred to Singapore for development and trials into mass production. Mass production technology and processes as well as quality control testing methodology are developed in Singapore by MCI.
“Singapore has a pool of talented engineers and technicians, strong government support, quick and ease of doing business, all these factors contributed to make our Singapore plant an ideal choice for mass production technology development centre. The Singapore facility has produced a number of world first products,†said Mr. Shigenori Ootsuka, president of MKM. “The global Blu-ray Disc storage media market is poised to grow exponentially with the emergence of Blu-ray Disc as the de facto technology format for High-Definition.â€
MCI will produce both the BD-R LTH TYPE 25GB and BD-R DL 50GB. BD-R LTH TYPE uses the organic dye developed by MKM as the recording layer. Through 15 years of experience gained in manufacturing dye media discs such as CD-R, DVD+/-R and DVD+/-R DL and coupled with dye and media design developed by MKM especially for BD-R LTH TYPE media, MCI is able to produce high quality and low cost disc. This will benefit the consumer and accelerate the growth of BD-R market. On the other hand, BD-R DL utilizes the inorganic recording layer. The BD-R DL has two recording layers. Hence it has twice the recording capacity of BD-R SL i.e. recording capacity of 50GB. Experience gain from manufacturing DVD+/-R DL disc and with inorganic recording film stack designed and double layer fabrication method developed by MKM, MCI is able to produced high capacity and high quality BD-R DL disc. This will benefit consumers who require high capacity disc storage.
