Midrange to low range CDR seems to be good enough

I tested some CDRs with the Nero Speed tool.

It showed severall errors on all discs ( but NO C1 errors, seems
my old ricoh burner can not show these )…there were C2 errors
on the following:

BASF ( now EMTEC ) 16x
Platinum 1-16x

those are about 1,5 - 2 years or so old.

SPEER 52x

this is about 4 months old

FUJI 48x, i burned this before 2 days.

Except the SPEER all are audio CD´s.

I didn´t hear errors listening with my old Ricoh
burner on PC, also none in my Technics quite old
cd - player.

The SPEER cdr which is a data, showed in fact 3 errors
in the wave files i played in a sound editor ( soundforge )…

I also wonder why the Nero tool gives different values for
the same CDR with the same speed settings… ?

I also tested a Platinum 16x which seem to be burned by
a friend on much too high speed, which showed terrible
errors…

Fuji 48x burned before 2 days with Ricoh MP7060s

tested yesterday max. speed ( about 20x ):

Those results don’t look right. No C1 errors; only C2 errors? I don’t think that is possible. You need a Lite-On CD-RW to get reliable C1/C2 results with Nero CD-DVD Speed.

oops, i didn´t know i need a Lite On…

But it is still surprising that these old cheap CDRs still
play okay, or ?

I mean most ppl. in the forums say only HQ media ( verbatim, TY etc. )
does this.

Perhaps it is because i mostly burned these with 4x speed…

Well, if you have to burn at a low speed to get good results, that’s an indicator the discs aren’t good enough…

I’m sure better discs/burner will improve your succesrate for future storage. I have some Kodaks 6-7 years old that don’t play too well (1/20) but a lot of my Lead Data (1/4) from those days don’t play very well or not at all. All my Verbatims 5-6 years old still work fine. Discs more or less stored the same way and burned with current Plextors…

only the most crappy CDRs I bought the last 6 years have C2 errors, most ‘normal’ brands of CDR are fine to this day, including maxell, tdk, sony, ritek, verbatim, even memorex…

discs i’ve noticed c2 errors were manufactured by ‘Multi media’ (nonames), ‘CSI’ (nonames) and ‘Infomedia’ (cheap ‘exel’ brand)

I mean most ppl. in the forums say only HQ media ( verbatim, TY etc. )
does this.

i think it’s more about DVD than CD… of course a good CD burner is important

CDR is a more mature medium – these days, even cheap discs are often quite decent enough. Of course, the worst you can buy are still horrible, but you don’t find as much terrible crap as you did 5-6 years ago.

thanx for the info @ all:

those old discs were only burned at 4x speed cause these days i only had
the 6/4/24 ricoh , so max. speed would be 6x. i used 4x mostly.

i still have this burner btw. and use it. i also have a aopen 52x, but did
not burn anything with it, cause the power supply of my 2nd comp is dead  i will try some tests with this newer faster burner as soon i have enough time to get pc no.2 running.

also i might notice that i think the cd speed2000 works decent with the ricoh ( although a poster above said it works only with LITE ON ) at least for showing C2 errors. i tried another programm “cd vergleich” and it showed those errors roughly the same, as well feurio complained about C2 errors on the discs.
but still the audio sounds okay i extracted from the disc…
